We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Instructional Assistant to support students with special needs at the elementary school level. The successful candidate will work closely with special education teachers and other staff members to provide a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for all students. The Instructional Assistant will play a key role in helping students achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals.


Key Responsibilities:

Individualized Student Support:

    • Provide one-on-one instruction and support tailored to the student's specific needs as outlined in their individualized education plan (IEP).
    • Assist the student with classwork, homework, and other academic tasks, ensuring that instructional materials and activities are appropriately modified.
    • Help the student develop independence in completing assignments and navigating the school environment.
    Behavioral Support:
    • Implement behavior management strategies as specified in the student's IEP or behavior intervention plan.
    • Monitor and document the student's behavior, noting progress and areas needing improvement.
    • Provide positive reinforcement and support the student in developing social skills and appropriate behaviors.
  • Personal Care:
    • Provide assistance with daily living skills as needed.
    • Ensure a safe and supportive environment for students with physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the special education teacher, general education teachers, and other school staff to coordinate the student's support plan.
    • Participate in team meetings and professional development sessions.
    • Communicate regularly with the student's teachers and relevant special education staff regarding progress, challenges, and any necessary adjustments.
  • Supervision:
    • Accompany and supervise the student during all school activities, including transitions between classes, lunch, recess, and any extracurricular activities.
    • Ensure that the student is fully included in classroom activities and school routines, adapting as necessary to meet the student’s needs.


Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • and one of the following -- (1) an associate degree or higher; (2) completed at least 48 units of study at an institution of higher education; and (3) passage of a basic skills competency test.
    • A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational or childcare setting, or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities. Completion of specialized training in the area of instructional services, psychology, or guidance is highly desirable, as well as bilingualism (Spanish).
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working with children, particularly those with special needs, is preferred.
    • Familiarity with special education practices, behavior management techniques, and individualized support plans is beneficial.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with children.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Basic computer skills for record-keeping and communication.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and assist students as needed.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • May require bending, kneeling, or reaching.


Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a classroom setting with occasional outdoor supervision.
  • May involve exposure to communicable diseases, potential physical confrontations, and emotional stress due to the nature of the job.
