The Substitute Assistant Teacher assists the teacher, ensuring that the classroom is in compliance with Head Start performance standards and UCCAC, Inc. Head Start Educational Component Plan.

Qualifications:

  1. HS diploma or equivalent, minimum of one year working with young children, preferably in a pre-school setting.
  2. Good oral and written communication skills.
  3. Willingness to obtain CDA credentials, CPR and first aid certification within the time frame established by the program.
  4. Reliable means of personal transportation and valid NYS drivers license.
  5. Ability to lift 50 pounds and agility required to move at children's level including bending, squatting, and kneeling.

The Substitute Assistant Teacher will:

  1. Assist the teacher in providing a safe and healthy learning environment that is welcoming to parents and supports and respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity and family composition.
  2. Assist in providing and environment and implementing a curriculum that encourages the development of self awareness, autonomy and self expression and supports the emerging skills of children.
  3. Assist in planning for routines and transitions so that they occur in a timely, predictable and unrushed manner according to each child's needs.
  4. With the parent/guardian and center team, identify strengths, needs and interest of the child and develop individual plans.
  5. Participate in classroom planning sessions to develop both individual and weekly lesson plans and be able to work with the teacher to provide a balanced daily program of child-initiated and adult-directed activities.
  6. Ensure all procedures of the component plan are followed including participation in home visits, assessments, student records, COR child assessments, case conferences and individual plans.
  7. Assist teacher to integrate the educational aspects of the program into other Head Start service areas.
  8. Manage assigned classroom in the absence of the teacher including supervision of volunteers.
  9. Attend all staff meetings, in-services and training. Attendance at parent meetings is required only if parents request teachers presence
  10. Assist to ensure that all classroom materials and supplies are kept clean and in good repair; submit yearly inventory as requested
