Summary
The Laboratory Phlebotomist (LP) is a member of the Clinical Laboratory Staff, responsible for properly obtaining and processing patient specimens for the purpose of testing those specimens. In addition, the phlebotomist may also be trained on testing and reporting CLIA waived testing to the health care professional. The LP will determine which specimens need to be referred on to the main MLHS laboratory or to a designated reference lab. The Laboratory Phlebotomist will also maintain a clean, well-stocked work area. The Laboratory Phlebotomist, when working in the clinic setting, may also assist with rooming patients or helping out nursing personnel if needed.


Job Duties

  • Able to successfully process orders, properly identity patients with 2 identifiers, and procure blood samples from all age groups.
  • Processes CLIA waived testing according to procedures and performs and documents QC appropriately and at timely intervals. Seeks aide if needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for enhancing personal and professional development.
  • Able to multitask and keep composure in a setting that is constantly changing and with a great deal of outside interruption.
  • Communicates important information to the next shift, and acts on important received information.
  • Faxes or mails reports to outside facilities and/or physicians who have sent their patients to the Clinic Laboratory for testing as needed.
  • Follows Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
  • Maintains courteous and professional manner in dealing with patients, visitors, medical practitioners and co-workers.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and reorders replacement stock as needed.
  • Thoroughly cleans work area at the end of the day 100% of the time.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and provides a safe working environment for self, patients and co-workers.
  • Understands and follows policies and procedures related to universal precautions and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard to prevent the spread of pathogens through self, patients and equipment.
  • Properly handles and disposes of infectious wastes.

Required Education and Experience

  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official course in phlebotomy

Expected Hours

afternoon and evenings Monday- Friday and every other Saturday from 6 am -2:30pm
