Summary of Position:

The Director of National Transportation is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing and optimizing the transportation and logistics needs of the organization. The role involves developing and executing comprehensive transportation strategies, oversight of the fleet and delivery drivers to enhance efficiency and timely deliveries, reducing costs, and ensuring accurate and seamless movement of goods across the national network to our customers. The role will primarily focus on outbound transportation and logistics with a small, increasing component of inbound logistics. Other key responsibilities include strategic planning, cross-departmental coordination and communication, cost management, performance metrics establishment, compliance, and risk management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in transportation management, proven leadership skills, excellent negotiation abilities, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a national transportation strategy in collaboration with senior leadership that aligns with overall business objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for improving transportation processes, reducing lead times, and enhancing overall supply chain performance.
  • Develop and manage transportation budgets, identifying opportunities for cost reduction while maintaining service levels
  • Manage route optimization and vehicle tracking to limit distribution costs and maximize customer satisfaction. Leverage software tools as appropriate.
  • Provide strategic oversight for outbound transportation, working closely with sales and customer service teams to align outbound strategies and coordinate delivery of goods with customer expectations.
  • Recommend policy, staffing, equipment recommendations to the Chief Operations Officer.
  • Adhere to safety initiatives and policies to display safety culture throughout department.
  • Complete UCR, IFTA, MCS-150 on annual/quarterly/Bi-annual basis
  • Strategically align department goals to company’s mission by creating appropriate measurement tools
  • Establish KPIs to measure the effectiveness of transportation operations and analyze daily reporting.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement programs to eliminate inefficiencies in operations, delivery routes, etc.
  • Ensure that industry and regulatory compliance is maintained, including DOT regulations, safety standards, and best practices.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to address potential disruptions in transportation operations.
  • Maintain strong relationships and communication links with all departments to facilitate an effective and positive work environment.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain management, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in supply chain, logistics, and transportation.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role with a proven track record of leading team members.
  • Demonstrated results in establishing goals and metrics for measuring success.
  • Strong computer application skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills are required.
  • Knowledge and experience with transportation systems and technology including but not limited to: Samsara, XRS - Omnitracs, Descartes, E-Logs, SmartDrive, Trimble Fleet (people net), Transportation Management Systems (TMS).
  • Technical Proficiency in PC skills including Microsoft Office, ADP, and J.J. Keller.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local fleet and safety regulatory requirements (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, etc.)
  • A demonstrated sense of urgency in meeting critical and time sensitive deadlines.
  • Analytical mindset and good problem-solving skills.
  • Additional skills: collaborative, analytical, detail oriented, highly organized, influential, relationship builder.
  • A combination of education and experience with the above requirements will also be considered to satisfy minimum requirements.
