POSITION SUMMARY:


Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes incident reports as required.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions and takes corrective action as needed.
  • Performs pool chemical testing, as required, and communicates any issue to supervisor immediately.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Attends monthly in-service training and YMCA mandatory staff meetings and training.
  • Works collectively with the director to ensure the needs of the department are met.
  • Adheres to all YMCA of Montclair policies, procedures, rules, regulations and best practices, including emergency and safety procedures, and supports the associations’ philanthropy efforts.
  • The position is identified as safety sensitive and subjected to required, random drug testing as scheduled.
  • Cooperate and interact with all members, staff, program participants, and volunteers in a professional, courteous, and friendly manner.
  • Demonstrate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Perform other job-related duties as may be assigned periodically by the supervisor.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer/BLS, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding
  • Oxygen Administration certification
  • Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR get certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Complete Bloodborne pathogens course annually.
  • Maintain all required certifications (active)

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to pass lifeguard skills assessment and water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and
    loud situations.
  • Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, wet, and inclement weather conditions)
  • Must be able to lift and pull 50 pounds.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $16.13 to $17.50


WORK SCHEDULE:


Weekday Evenings: Monday to Friday

Weekends: Saturday and Sunday
