Director of Counseling & Consultation Services

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Counseling and Consultation Services is responsible for effectively providing counseling services and overseeing programming in accordance with the University’s Mission and Vision. This position contributes to providing an inclusive environment for students to receive quality, confidential services, and support to supplement their educational success.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides a friendly, student-centered, supportive atmosphere for students in need of personal and/or academic support;
  • Delivers counseling services to provide student assistance in the development of effective coping skills and decision making strategies;
  • Conducts individual, group, and relationship counseling, crisis intervention, follow-up with community mental health care providers, and provides outreach programming;
  • Maintains confidential client files and appropriate recordkeeping, according to professional, ethical, and legal standards;
  • Serves as custodian and administrator of student counseling records;
  • Provides consultation to faculty and staff regarding students of concern;
  • Works closely with faculty, staff, and standing committees of the University in order to provide a comprehensive program of student retention services;
  • Serves as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT);
  • Oversee and provide relevant programming to support campus wide mental health support ;
  • Provides supervision to the Coordinator for Disability Services and for Peer Support Educators (student leaders);
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work from an accredited program;
  • Current license to practice in the state of Texas (LPC, LPC Associate, LCSW, LMSW, LMFT, LMFT Associate). Provisionally licensed candidates must secure offsite clinical supervision prior to start date;
  • Current liability insurance;
  • At least 1 year of clinical experience working with young adult populations;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Strong generalist experience working with a variety of issues common in college populations including, but not limited to, stress and anxiety management, eating and body image issues, sexual and other forms of trauma, substance use/misuse, non-suicidal self-injury, suicidality, depression and mood disorders, ADHD, etc.;
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse and historically underrepresented and underserved populations including, but not limited to, communities of color, LGBQI+ students, transgender, and non-binary students, as well as students of different ethnicities and immigration histories;
  • Openness to developing and improving job knowledge and skills, including completing CEU requirements in pertinent areas for self-development and licensure;
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge and applied experience with trauma-informed care;
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Proficient in public speaking and presentations;
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Demonstrated history of positive working relationships and collaborative style;
  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA laws;
  • Ability to provide counseling services in person and virtual;
  • Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends;
  • Bilingual, Spanish speaking, preferred;
  • Experience with home schooled populations;
  • Experience in a college counseling center or other relevant university setting, preferred;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite of products and social media management, preferred.

SUPERVISION

  • This position reports to the Dean of Student Affairs

SALARY RANGE

  • $57,000 Annually, plus benefits

  • Full-time, on-site,

Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin's first institution of higher education. The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas.
