Job DescriptionJob Description

Summary/Objective

Responsible for various functions of traffic engineering projects including collection and analysis of traffic flow data, preparation of reports, and recommendations for project improvements. Performs assigned engineering tasks for the design and preparation of plans and performs design calculations for assigned projects.

Essential Functions

  • Sets up, adjusts and operates traffic data collection equipment on work sites
  • Measures vehicular and pedestrian traffic using video collection units, pneumatic tubes, and/or magnetic traffic counters
  • Observes, documents and analyzes data about traffic flow, crashes, signal operation and pedestrian movements in the field at project locations.
  • Analyzes data from multiple sources and makes recommendations based on sound engineering principles
  • Performs drafting assignments to prepare construction plans or to plot topographical maps or traffic movement maps
  • Collects and analyzes data and reviews traffic data received from field crews for errors
  • Maintains accurate data base for all traffic collected data
  • Maintains and repairs data collection equipment as needed
  • Prepares graphs, charts, diagrams, and other aids to illustrate observations and conclusions
  • Develops design concepts, details and drawings using CADD equipment
  • Develops construction cost estimates, reports and specifications using computer programs
  • Prepares the project deliverables including plans, specifications, reports, cost estimates
  • Applies applicable standards of practice to prepare the assigned civil, transportation, structural and/or site engineering plans and project documents
  • Interfaces with various disciplines and CADD staff as needed to complete assigned tasks
  • Performs field investigations and construction inspection duties as assigned
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Travel required up to 30-40%

Education/Experience/Skills

  • B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering
  • 0-3 years of experience
  • Unexpired Driver’s License
  • Flexibility to work a non-standard work schedule to meet project/client requirements
  • Engineer Intern (E.I.) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good engineering judgment
  • Computer skills and knowledge in the use of traffic engineering software and CADD software preferred
  • Good communication skills and ability to write technical reports
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present recommendations and results
