Job Summary:
The Domestic Violence Prevention Community Health Worker will play a pivotal role in addressing domestic violence and related issues within the community served by the Indian Health Board. Working closely with the Community Health Educator, this position focuses on educating community members on safe and healthy relationships, implementing screening processes, and providing direct support to individuals affected by violence. This position includes collaboration with diverse stakeholders to promote awareness, facilitate access to resources, and enhance the overall well-being of community members.
Essential Job Functions:
- Collaborate with the Community Health Educator to develop and implement strategies for educating community members on violence prevention, including safe and healthy relationships.
- Plan and execute outreach events to raise awareness of domestic violence prevention within the community.
- Integrate screening processes for various forms of violence into clinic protocols and provide training to staff members.
- Collaborate with the medical team to provide services and meet the needs of patients who have disclosed a history of violence.
- Provide direct support to individuals affected by violence, including safety planning, resource referrals, and addressing intersectional needs such as education, employment, and housing.
- Conduct outreach efforts to engage the community and increase access to domestic violence prevention resources.
- Collaborate with community partners and stakeholders to enhance program effectiveness and reach.
- Maintain accurate documentation of program activities and participant interactions for reporting purposes.
- Provides excellent customer service to patients, peers, leadership, and community partners.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of domestic violence prevention strategies and trauma-informed care principles.
- Ability to understand and meet the needs of the patient through respectful, courteous, and caring interactions with patients, families and other health professionals.
- Knows, understands, and adheres to organizational policy related to the patient's rights for confidential care.
- Knowledge and respect of the American Indian culture and other cultures served by IHB.
- Actively participates and works positively, flexibly, and cooperatively in a team effort to accomplish the goals of the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis.
- Valid driver's license, automobile insurance and reliable vehicle.
- Ability to travel in the metro area and work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
- Skilled at identifying and engaging community partners to increase accessibility to health care for diverse and marginalized communities.
- Manages time effectively and prioritizes task completion to meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel.
Education/Experience:
- Community Health Worker certification or willingness to complete certification while employed.
- Preference for candidates with experience in domestic or sexual violence advocacy.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and local community resources.
- Associate's degree in Public Health, Social Work, Social Services or related field preferred.
- Length of experience in a social service/public health field may be considered in lieu of associate's degree.
- Experience in engaging, building, and implementing working relationships and collaborations with diverse communities and culturally-specific agencies.
- Knowledge of health care, social services and accessing community resources.
- Knowledge of the American Indian Community in Minneapolis is essential.
- Knowledge and experience with social media platforms preferred.
Physical Demands
The work requires some physical exertion such as periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, carrying of light items and driving an automobile and other similar activities. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations requiring a range of safety and other precautions.

IHB makes reasonable efforts to limit access to and use of protected health information (PHI) by employees to the minimum necessary performance of assigned duties as outlines in job descriptions. This position is access restricted to PHI needed to carry out health care operations.
