GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Lactation Consultant position will report to the Birthing Center supervisor and will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the breastfeeding dyad. The Lactation Consultant works with the health care team and functions within the scope of practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide individualized lactation support through consultations. 
  2. Provide evidence-based care and resources to breastfeeding patients.
  3. Provide assistance and education with breast pumping, pump usage, and breast milk collection and storage.
  4. Design and collect quality metrics for quality improvement measures.
  5. Works effectively with pediatric care team on care and discharge planning.
  6. Create and execute lactation program classes to support members of the community.
  7. Complete follow up phone calls and postpartum consultation visits as needed.
  8. Mentor staff and provide unit education.
  9. Provide team support services and demonstrate technical functions in a cost-effective, skillful manner that results in team, Physician and patient satisfaction.
  10. Complete and maintain all yearly competency monitors and mandatory training within defined time frame (i.e., safety, annual in-services, corporate compliance, confidentiality, HIPAA).
  11. Consistently attend unit meetings.
  12. Demonstrate an ability to remain calm and productive in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  13. Compliant with patient confidentiality standards.
  14. Support and embrace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  15. All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certified at time of hire into this role, must have two years of experience working with lactating women and infants as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and/ or registered nurse.
  2. If not IBCLC certified at time of hire, must be actively working to achieve within one year.
  3. Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  4. Current BLS certification
  5. Consistently works as a team a member and communicates effectively.
