ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Communication (verbal, non-verbal, written)

  1. Utilize professional behavior while interacting with all healthcare team members, administrative personnel, and patients/families.
  2. Provide care for all persons in a non-biased manner, treating each person/family with dignity & respect.
  3. Incorporate the cultural needs of the patient/family while providing care.

Documentation / Electronic Medical Record

  1. Accurately document and update the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) information.
  2. Accurately document information in writing to supplement the EMR.
  3. Submit prescription refill requests electronically to providers in the EMR.
  4. Obtain a written request/release for medical records as requested by the provider.
  5. Assist with scheduling appointments and referrals as needed.
  6. Obtain/review HCP orders before performing procedures, etc.
  7. Perform timely and accurate documentation in EMR to support the billing department.

Patient Care

  1. Obtain accurate height, weight, vital signs, and oxygen saturation on each patient.
  2. Review medications and allergies with the patient at each scheduled visit.
  3. Prepare the patient to be seen by the provider.
  4. Assist the provider with examinations and specimen collections as needed.
  5. Always provide privacy for the patient.
  6. Administer medications as ordered by the healthcare provider.
  7. Utilize current knowledge to administer/prepare medications/immunizations safely.
  8. Provide patient education as directed by the provider.
  9. Perform diagnostics and screening tests in the clinic (EKG, visual acuity, audiometry, etc.)
  10. Assist the healthcare provider with dermatological procedures, staples, sutures, suture removal, and wound care.
  11. Perform sterilization of equipment using the autoclave as needed

Laboratory Testing

  1. Utilize personal protective equipment anytime there is potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
  2. Prepare laboratory requisitions to accompany specimens sent to a reference lab.
  3. Perform capillary sticks and venipuncture for specimen collections/laboratory testing.
  4. Prepare specimens for transport to a reference laboratory.
  5. Perform in-house laboratory testing in the clinic according to CLIA regulations.
  6. Perform controls on CLIA-Waived testing per guidelines
  7. Perform required sterilizer maintenance
  8. Clean and decontaminate surgical instruments, package and prepare for sterilizing
  9. Sterilize surgical instruments



Clinical Environment

  1. Accurately and completely maintain the required logs for medications, temperatures, quality improvement, etc.
  2. Actively participate in maintaining cleanliness of the work environment, examination rooms, laboratory, etc. per OSHA guidelines.
  3. Assist in maintaining inventory of supplies, reviewing expiration dates, and stocking the clinical areas.

Security / Confidentiality

  1. Participate in shredding and scanning medical records according to HIPAA regulations and retention schedule.
  2. Maintain security of individual passwords used to access electronic databases required to perform clinical duties.
  3. Actively utilize HIPAA guidelines for all patient interactions.

Training

  1. Assist in training new hires in the clinical department
  2. Attend/coordinate huddles & participate in the patient care team.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Perform other related duties as required or assigned by the supervisor incidental to the work described herein. Perform non-related duties, as needed, necessary for the smooth operation of the clinic.

 

EVALUATION:

The evaluation of work performance is ongoing and performed by Director of Nursing. Evaluation components include duties and responsibilities, teamwork, general working behavior, and ability to interact with clinical and administrative staff. Formal evaluations are performed annually by the Director of Nursing.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Basic computer skills including web-based applications and email.
  • Basic office equipment skills including fax, copier and scanner.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be professional in appearance.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks.
  • Excellent work history.
  • Ability to pass periodic drug testing per Personnel Policy.
  • Obtain annual tuberculosis screening/ immunizations based on risk assessment.
  • No convictions of serious crimes or felonies.
  • Willing to travel to other medical sites as needed.
  • Knowledge of current OSHA / HIPAA Rules and Regulations.
  • Team player.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Maintain current/unrestricted nursing license by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Maintain a current certification in Basic Life Support.
  • Complete monthly training required of each employee of the clinic.
  • Participate in ongoing continuing educational activities.
