Job DescriptionJob Description

AP Giannini Middle School is a public school located in the Outer Sunset of San Francisco. With over 1,200 students in grades 6-8, APG boasts a 15,000 square foot garden with 17 vegetable beds, a native area, chickens, a rainwater catchment system, a food forest with young fruit trees, and a small greenhouse. The Outdoor Science and Garden Educator is managed and employed by BACR’s APG Beacon site and works collaboratively with APG teachers and admin to create and facilitate outdoor lessons that incorporate students’ curricular studies in math, science, ELA, social studies, art, nutrition, and sustainability.

Beacons are a citywide model in San Francisco in which community based organizations (in this case BACR) work within middle and elementary schools to support students, families, and the community. APG Beacon offers before and after school programming, school day push-in support, social events, antiracism and affinity groups, clubs, family engagement, and anything else our school community might need.

This position is jointly funded by A.P. Giannini, the APG PTSA, and APG Beacon (BACR). This position will be employed by Bay Area Community Resources and managed by the Beacon Director.

Minimum Requirements:
  • At least 2-3 years experience working with youth aged 10-14, including individuals with special needs (outdoor group management experience preferred)
  • Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home gardening, including chicken husbandry, fruit tree care, composting, drip irrigation, greenhouse management, California native plants, garden carpentry, cooking, sustainable design
  • Knowledge of or interest in topics including urban gardening, botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access, sustainability, permaculture
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively and be flexible, organized, patient, and resourceful
  • Computer and project management skills
  • Must be able to do physical gardening work and be able to lift 40 lbs.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Interest in and knowledge of environmental justice and community engagement

Responsibilities:
  • Facilitates 3-5 classes in the outdoor classroom each day with students in grades 6-8, including special needs, incorporating math, science, language arts, social studies, art, nutrition, and sustainability topics as they relate to the outdoor classroom (15-23 classes/week)
  • Develops lesson plans and curriculum in relation to California, Common Core, and Next Generation Science Standards
  • Manages the school garden, plans and prepares for garden work activities, manages planting schedule, secures garden supplies and tools
  • Monitors chickens and manages community volunteers to ensure animals are cared for during school breaks.
  • Oversees and coordinates students’ hands-on experiences in the garden (propagating, tending, harvesting, cooking, composting, pruning, pest management)
  • Plans and manages a garden club during lunch two days each week. Monitors garden and student volunteers during lunch the other 3 days each week and each morning before school
  • Plans and facilitates four volunteer garden weekend work days for families and community during the school year
  • Attends school staff meetings and coordinates with teachers to create a schedule to ensure full use outdoor classroom
  • Oversees maintenance and upkeep of systems and equipment
  • Monitors, documents, and reports on activities and lessons to parent teacher association and community
  • Researches and applies for grants for outdoor learning classroom expansion projects
  • Upholds SF Unified School District’s Green Schoolyard Maintenance Agreement: keep pathways clean; ensure plants are watered year-round; weed and prune areas and keep growth 18 inches from school at all times; clear fallen leaves from gutters and drains; clear debris from green schoolyard areas; remove plant materials that may attract rodents; clean and maintain water-related elements; and implementing other maintenance tasks as recommended in the SFUSD Green Schoolyard Guidelines
