NURSE EXTERN PROGRAM

Cleveland Area Hospital Nurse Extern Program allows soon to be graduate nursing students to build clinic competencies. Externs work under the direct supervision of an RN mentor who will supervise and direct their learning needs. This is a paid position that allows the student to work the summer before their Senior year, and during breaks from school. The program consists of direct and indirect patient care experiences.

Program Requirements:

  • School transcript
  • Current BLS
  • Skills-Competency List from Nursing Program
  • Complete employment application and pre-employment health screen
  • Attend Hospital Orientation prior to beginning Externship
  • Commit to 12-24 hours per week during summer, flexible hours during school.
  • Externship end upon completion of Senior year of Nursing School or when no longer enrolled in an approved program.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Employee can perform all duties of nursing assistant as well as other technical skills that have been learned in their nursing education programs, and for which competency has been previously demonstrated under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Nurse Extern must provide the list of competencies from their program. Employees are expected to adhere to and abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act. The Nurse Extern will NOT be able to administer medications, blood products, and intravenous fluids, perform assessments, act in a supervisory position, take verbal orders from a health care provider or develop a written plan of care. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the Nurse Extern at all times and must be physically present in the institution.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Adhere to all policies of the organization, including (but not limited to) job description, certification/licensure requirements, mission statement, HIPAA, confidentiality standard and patient’s rights.
  2. Stay up to date with organization communication and directive.
  3. Complies with behavioral competency
  4. Utilize communication skills necessary to interact with the patient, their family, and all co-workers.
  5. Utilize time efficiently and ensure quality patient care.
  6. Effectively utilize coaching, positive reinforcement and other methods to enhance team performance.
  7. Participates in hourly rounding.
  8. Arrive on time for scheduled shift. Badge in or document time worked according to hospital policy.
  9. Dress appropriately for your position. Be professional. Be respectful and compassionate.
  10. Maintain a clean, well-organized work area.
  11. Actively participate in shift report.
  12. Make hourly rounds on patients or more if patient’s condition warrants. Document your findings appropriately. If a problem is identified, notify the Charge RN immediately. Collaborate closely with the RN, LPN, and CNA's.
  13. Perform tasks under the direct supervision of the R.N. Tasks may include but not limited to the following:
  • Phlebotomy
  • Initiate a heparin lock.
  • Instill a foley catheter.
  • Nasogastric tube placement
  • Wound dressing change
  • Placement of a wound vac
  • Sterile dressing changes
  • Setting up a sterile tray in the ED
  • Perform an EKG
  1. Appropriately collaborate with other health professionals in the management of your patient's care.
  2. Continually educate your patients and their families on their diagnosis and plan of care.
  3. Comply with EMTALA and HIPAA in all patient encounters. Be knowledgeable of these regulations and serve as a resource for the staff.
  4. Before completion of your shift review all charting and assure all pertinent information is accurately charted in the medical record. Ensure your signature is on all documentation. Ensure I&O’s, weights, VS, treatments, dressing changes and other pertinent patient data is recorded in the appropriate place in the patient’s chart.
  5. Follows procedures for charging of items to patient account.
  6. Complete requests for documentation in a timely manner.
  7. Complete educational paper programs and other materials provided by CNO in a timely manner.
  8. Complete skills competencies annually.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Must be in good standing with the Nursing program and enrolled in the final year of the program. Must have current BLS certification. Must have good verbal and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent customer service skills. Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions. Must be able to manage stress appropriately. Make decisions under pressure. Handle multiple priorities. Must be able to take direction from the supervising RN.

EXPERIENCE:

Students will be able to begin working the summer before their final year of their Nursing program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primarily standing, sometimes sitting. Utilize good hearing, vocal and visual skills. Exposure to toxic/caustic/chemical/detergents. Exposure to moving mechanical parts. Exposure to potential electrical shock. Exposure to X-ray/electrum/agentic energy. Exposure to communicable diseases. Exposure to blood and/or body fluids. Exposure to latex rubber.

This position could have access to patient confidential records and must comply with HIPAA regulations as well as Compliance Policies.
