Preventive Conservator

The Preservation Society of Newport County seeks a Preventive Conservator to join the Conservation Department for an initial term of two years, with the possibility of renewal. The primary focus of this position is to prepare collections for relocation to a new offsite Collections Care Facility. The Preventive Conservator will document and evaluate objects in various storage locations, perform basic object cleaning (dust removal and vacuuming), coordinate pest treatments (freezing, anoxic treatment), provide recommendations for re-housing, handling, and packing for transport, and identify objects for further assessment by staff conservators. This position reports directly to the Chief Conservator and works collaboratively with other members of the Museum Affairs Department to complete projects and tasks, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Environmental Monitoring across all properties. The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated understanding of the fundamental concepts and practices of preventive conservation, collections handling, conservation ethics, examination, documentation, and preventive care.
- Assess the condition of collection objects, in storage or on display, for relocation to Collections Care Facility. Complete all documentation consistent with department standards.
- Inspect conditions in assigned storage areas (temperature, humidity, light, and pest activity). Maintain records of work performed via checklists at each site.
- Carry out preventive conservation tasks and projects, meeting deadlines and quality standards as established by Chief Conservator.
- Fabricate storage systems, pack and move objects as needed.
- Assist with exhibition installation and gallery maintenance as required.
- Participate in emergency preparation and recovery activities.
- Ensure preventive conservation is addressed while monitoring contractors, special events, filming, and other activities at PSNC properties.
- Assist in administrative tasks such as maintaining tools, equipment and supply inventory.
- Assist staff conservators with conservation treatments as required.
- Remain current with best practices in the preventive conservation field.
- Follow prescribed safety and health rules, regulations, and practices.
- Perform other related duties as required or directed.
- Bachelor’s degree (MA preferred), Art Conservation, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation or related field. Two or more years’ experience handling and caring for museum collections (internship experience accepted).
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with effectiveness and efficiency.
- Experience handling fine and decorative art.
- Experience with condition reporting and the corresponding nomenclature.
- Ability to work as part of a team and in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision.
- Experience with object rehousing for storage.
- Experience working with power and small hand tools.
- Basic photography skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with working on an iPad for filling out survey forms.
- Ability to carry up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to work in small spaces or close to the ground.
- Comfortable ascending/descending ladders.
- Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment when required.
- Valid driver’s license.
