Seasonal lifeguard

$15/hr

Brevard County, FL

Under general supervision, performs entry-level protective service work guarding the safety of patrons at a County swimming pool and providing information pertaining to water quality and water temperature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Safeguards and regulates the conduct of pool patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents.
  • Stays alert to detect possible bathers in distress.
  • Strictly enforces the rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons using the facility and promptly warns users of existing safety hazards.
  • Rescues and renders appropriate first aid procedures to patrons as necessary.
  • Keeps daily records of individuals rescued and assisted the first aid provided; and weather and sanitary conditions.
  • Operates or aids in the operation and maintenance of the filtration system and is responsible for assigned equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining the general appearance and cleanliness of the facility and answers questions, when able to do so, without being distracted from lifeguarding duties.
  • Performs related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Successful completion of the Brevard County Lifeguard Training Program PLUS Lifeguard Training with open water certification.
  • Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) PLUS a basic first aid certification from an approved agency and maintain both certifications during the term of employment.
  • Must possess, or obtain prior to employment a current valid American Red Cross lifeguard training course.
  • A current valid State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or First Responder may be substituted for the basic first aid certification.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must successfully complete prior to employment, the Brevard County Lifeguard Performance Test. CD#: 8600

LIFEGUARD I

The applicant will be disqualified from further consideration for the position if a Level I background criminal background investigation, performed in accordance with Brevard County Administrative Order 5 (AO-5), disclosed the applicant has disqualifying convictions (as defined by AO-5).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (Note: The knowledge, skills, and abilities identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this class. Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities may be applicable for individual positions.)

  • Thorough knowledge of water safety, rescue, and first aid techniques.
  • Skill in swimming, lifesaving, and first aid.
  • Ability to learn County rules and regulations relating to pool activities.
  • Ability to exercise maturity and good judgment in enforcing pool rules firmly and tactfully.
  • Ability to complete reports.
  • Ability to remain alert to prevent dangerous situations, recognize emergencies, and take effective action.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and to control crowds.
  • Ability to remain alert for long periods of time.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is primarily physically light, however, work does require occasional strenuous physical activity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work may involve long periods of exposure to the sun and chlorinated water.
