Under the guidance of the Professional Services Director or Pharmacist, the Certified Pharmacy Technician completes prescription order processing activities and performs pharmacy technician functions per regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Able to verify patient information on prescription is complete and accurate
  • Enters prescription into pharmacy software system, prepares prescription, labels container and files the prescription to be checked by the pharmacist before it is given to the patient
  • Establish and maintain patient files
  • This position works under the direct supervision of a pharmacist
  • Create/Maintain current Standard Operating Procedures/Protocols/Procedures for Professional Services department
  • Update and maintain drug treatment protocols and prescription labels in customer/order entry database
    • Process reports and communicate with clients and veterinarians
  • Proofing documents (letters to clients, Vet reports, etc.)
  • Keep current with Regulatory statutes in regards to prescriptions and international shipments.

Marginal Functions:

  • Must be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
  • Must be detail oriented and precise
  • Strong customer service and teamwork skills
  • Verify and process all prescriptions for internal and external veterinarians. This includes contacting veterinarians for approval of items, entering RX information into the computer and printing labels for all orders.
  • Proof, process and highlight specific information on pick tickets for shipping department
  • Create and maintain budgets, prescriptions, label and client information in customer/order entry database
  • Provides Want Lists to veterinarians as needed
  • Utilize customer relationship management (CRM) system for communication with veterinarians and sales staff
  • Bill clients for the Dairy Production Management Services (DPMS)
  • Run reports as needed
  • Handle the filing of laboratory results, billing of laboratory fees and contacting clients as needed
  • Handle filing of electronic and manual documents
  • Maintaining/Updating RX Client's records (Name, Phone, Address)
  • Expiring and Updating client's records and prescriptions
  • Handling phone calls and paperwork for Health Certificates
  • Create, manage and file Veterinary Feed Directives (VFD's)
  • Assist the veterinarians with various tasks as needed (protocol books, training class materials)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with pharmacy, veterinarians, operations and sales staff

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Certification required by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. (Certification must be renewed every two years. At least 1 year of Certified Pharmacy Technician experience. Two to three years of related office experience work in business or office/administrative management and/or knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures used in the prescription setting a plus. Also, preferred, 2 years education beyond high school and 2 years of experience in the wholesaling of drugs.


Continuing Education Requirements: Twenty hours of continuing education, including one hour of Pharmacy Law, for certificate renewal. CPhT, PTCB


Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret pick tickets and invoices. Ability to write business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers and other employees in a professional manner.


Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Must maintain a high level of accuracy.


Other skills and Abilities: Ability to work 40+/- hours per week, operate a computer, work with minimal supervision, follow directions, prioritize work, manage multiple projects and work well under pressure.
