Position Title: Certified Surgical Technologist 2

Location: McKinney, TX

Shift Details:

  • Shift Per Week: 3
  • Scheduled Hours: 36

Compensation:

  • Minimum Rate Per Hour: $25
  • Maximum Rate Per Hour: $36


Essential Functions of the Role:


  • Pre-Surgery Preparation: Discuss any special needs with the surgeon before surgery and scrub in adequately for proper preparation of instruments before the surgeon scrubs in.
  • Operative Site Preparation: Aseptically clean and clip the patient as needed, and prepare the operative site.
  • Instrument Table Management: Prepare and maintain the instrument table(s) in an organized and comprehensive manner, ensuring no damage to instruments and accuracy in instrument counts. Identify and rectify any damaged or incomplete trays.
  • Operating Room Setup: Set up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules, arranging sterile supplies and equipment for specific procedures, and carefully selecting and opening only the needed supplies.
  • Surgical Assistance: Ensure the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during surgical procedures. Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and assist with draping and positioning the patient.
  • Specimen Handling: Receive and handle surgical specimens following protocol, verifying the source and passing them off to the circulating nurse.
  • Post-Surgery Tasks: Assist with the placement of surgical dressings, disassemble surgical instrumentation, prepare soiled instrumentation for decontamination, and clean the operating room following each case.
  • Infection Control: Follow infection control policies, Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) guidelines, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, and other regulatory requirements to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Inventory Maintenance: Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies, ensuring proper documentation and control of maintenance.


Key Success Factors:


  • Infection Prevention Knowledge: Understanding of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards.
  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and related tools and technologies.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with surgical and central sterile processing team members.
  • Safety Awareness: Awareness of chemical and radiation hazards, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Educational Requirements: Completion of a CAAHEP accredited or nationally accredited surgical technologist program with certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from NBSTSA or NCCT, or completion of formal training in surgical technology in the military or Public Health Service, or relevant experience before September 1, 2009.

Qualifications:


  • Education: Graduate of an Accredited Program.
  • Experience: Less than 1 year of experience required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS certification required within 30 days of hire or transfer.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST): Certification from NBSTSA or NCCT, or completion of formal training in ST from the military or Public Health Service, or employed in ST role in a healthcare facility prior to 9/1/2009.
