SUMMARY

GRTC connects communities and enhances lives by operating a multi-modal transit system that services the Richmond region. These include fixed-route, express-route, bus rapid transit, paratransit, microtransit, and vanpool. GRTC Information Systems and Technology, IST department is seeking an intern to engage in various technologies and work with client environments and various technologies used therein.

The IT Intern will assist the IT team with various tasks and projects to support the organization's technology infrastructure. The ideal candidate is interested in pursuing a career in information technology and is looking for hands-on learning experience. The intern will interact with various technologies, adhere to proper departmental processes and customer communications, and provide the highest level of client service possible.

The IST Intern works collaboratively under the guidance of the Director of Information Systems and Technology. This part-time Intern position works closely with co-workers, senior technical staff, and other support staff in this collaborative, highly active, engaging environment. The ideal candidate is interested in pursuing a career in information technology and is looking for hands-on learning experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support by responding to help desk requests and troubleshooting issues.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
  • Install and configure software applications, operating systems, and updates.
  • Perform routine maintenance and updates on network systems and devices.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of IT policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other IT team members to identify and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned by IT management.
  • Keep accurate records of work performed and provide regular progress updates to IT management.

Education and/or Experience

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field and possessing knowledge of technology terminologies.
  • A history of achievement and aptitude demonstrated by a strong GPA and/or other recognitions such as scholarships, awards, and honor societies.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Coursework in Information Technology, Information Services, or associated technology coursework.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong initiative, self-motivation, and ability to complete tasks on time.
  • Very organized and detail-oriented, with a high degree of accuracy and follow-up
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and technical troubleshooting
  • Some experience with Windows desktop or server operating systems is preferred.
  • Some experience with networking hardware and basics is preferred.
  • Information Technology certifications are preferred but not required.
