Flavor Chemist

Position Purpose: The Flavor Chemist plays a pivotal role in day-to-day operations by working individually and with a team to develop, improve, and duplicate flavors as well as identify process and material improvements. This position will also interact regularly with Operations to advise on scale-up of flavor production.
Essential Functions

- Represent R&D to validate that all current and future flavor formulas are accurate and complete in our ERP system.
- Lead projects related to creating, modifying, or matching flavors based on customer requests.
- Create and document new flavors and formulations based on customer needs.
- Assist Production with the scale-up of new flavor formulations and improvement of current flavor formulations.
- Keep knowledge of raw materials, processing techniques, and regulations current.
- Provide technical leadership and support to internal departments and customers.
- Analyze new flavor formulations and provide organoleptic feedback.
- Participate in tastings and provide direction for applications projects.
- Assist Senior Flavor Chemist with internal and external products and projects.
- Complete projects in a timely manner and communicate delays to the appropriate personnel.
- As needed, review analytical testing, maintain equipment, and manage formula systems.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Ability to effectively communicate with all colleagues, levels of management, vendors and customers with an emphasis on Manufacturing/Operations familiarity.
- Must be able to use GC/MS and other industry standards for flavor analysis.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage concurrent projects.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and applicable standard operating procedures

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, as well as talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Must be able to regularly use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and climb stairs. The position requires the ability to occasionally lift, push, or pull office and lab products and supplies up to 25 pounds.
Working conditions
The position works in a lab and office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and filing cabinets, and standard lab equipment such as pipettes, scales, meters and the GC/MS. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
Travel
Local travel between Custom Flavors’ locations is required. Several times per year, air travel to national or regional conventions or customer visits may be required (less than 10% travel).
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time, on-site position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm.
Required Education and Experience
- Certification through Society of Flavor Chemists
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, or related field
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in the flavor industry
Preferred Education and Experience
- 3 years of experience as a certified flavorist
- Experience in a flavor manufacturing environment
- Supervisory experience is a plus
