Project SEARCH is a business led, nine-month internship that takes place entirely at Hartford Healthcare's Backus Hospital. This program offers a nine-month internship for young adults with significant disabilities, equipping them with valuable, transferable workplace skills. Project SEARCH integrates an employability curriculum, teaching skills applicable to in-demand community employment. In addition, participants intern through a series of rotations in various departments at Backus Hospital, with the end goal being competitive employment.


The Project SEARCH Instructor and Skills Trainer will work together closely, on-site with interns at Backus Hospital. The Instructor and Skills Trainer provide ongoing training and support to interns and host business mentors to ensure integration of the interns at the host site and facilitate a strong relationship among team members, while delivering strong employment outcomes for interns.


*This is a full-time, year-round position

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide individualized support for Project SEARCH interns during the internships at the host business (Backus Hospital) for the interns to acquire competitive and marketable skills. This could include:

    1. Initial training of internship task utilizing systematic instruction techniques

    2. Building natural supports

    3. Developing accommodations and identifying appropriate assistive technology

  2. Develop task analysis when needed to support the intern to learn and perform tasks to required productivity and quality standards

  3. Identify and implement training strategies and/or services in coordination with the Project SEARCH instructor and host business staff.

  4. In coordination with the instructor and business liaison, identify and develop internship sites that offer a variety of opportunities to build marketable, competitive skills that lead to employment.

  5. Consult with host business department employees on tools and techniques that support intern learning and success.

  6. Participate in training interns in the areas of grooming, hygiene, communication, interviewing, and work/social behavior as they relate to successful employment.

  7. Assist with completing tools such as the VocFit Assessment to determine the abilities of the intern, the demands of the internship tasks, and help the team to make meaningful internship matches.

  8. Assess intern progress and give feedback to intern and team members.

  9. Provide travel training for the intern to get to the host business independently.

  10. Submit and complete appropriate paperwork and enter data in the Member Portal.

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

  • Training or skills and experience in training/coaching, systematic instruction, job, and task analysis.

  • Strong leadership skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively, as a productive team member with the instructor, families, affiliate school and all agency personnel and stakeholders.

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills which promote personal relationships with interns, families, host business, Project SEARCH team members, and outside agencies.

  • Organizational ability, self-directedness, and initiative when given a variety of responsibilities and assigned tasks.

  • Ability to make decisions and problem solve with a team of service providers.

  • Ability to drive. Have and maintain a personal vehicle for use in transporting interns when needed; have a valid state driver’s license, insurance, and a clean driving record.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma, required.

  • 1 year of previous experience working with individuals with disabilities in a workplace setting in the community, preferred.


WORKING CONDITIONS

The nature of the interns being taught requires sound judgment and leadership skills to maintain a safe educational environment. This program will be housed off-site at a host business (Backus Hospital) and may require travel.

*Skills Trainer will be expected to perform related duties outside of the Project SEARCH program as deemed necessary and appropriate by the UCP of Eastern CT Associate Executive Director and/or designee.
