Position Summary

The Consulting Controls Engineer will be part of a team that focuses on advancing Missile Launch Testing Capabilities. This role requires extensive experience in control systems, including response analysis, compensator tuning, and position/rate/current control loops. The role involves leading hardware design, integration, and testing of control systems. Candidates should demonstrate strong technical leadership, superior communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment. A proactive attitude and a drive to enhance technological capabilities are essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Consultation and Guidance:
    1. Provide expert consultation across all subsystems of Missile Launch Test Capabilities. This involves offering strategic advice and technical guidance to senior leaders within government organizations to ensure alignment with project objectives and performance standards.
    2. Collaborate closely with stakeholders to identify challenges, propose solutions, and make recommendations that enhance the effectiveness and reliability of missile launch testing systems.
  • Integration and Testing Support:
    1. Lead and support the integration of various subsystems within the Missile Launch Test Capabilities framework. This includes coordinating efforts to combine different hardware and software components into a cohesive system.
    2. Oversee and execute comprehensive testing phases to validate system performance, reliability, and safety. This entails developing test plans, executing tests, analyzing results, and troubleshooting issues to ensure that all subsystems function as intended.
  • Control System Analysis and Optimization:
    1. Conduct in-depth analysis of the designed control systems to assess their performance against specified requirements. Utilize advanced analytical tools and methodologies to evaluate system behavior and identify areas for improvement.
    2. Provide actionable recommendations to optimize control systems, ensuring they meet or exceed performance criteria. This includes refining control algorithms, tuning system parameters, and implementing design modifications as needed.
  • Design Iteration and Improvement:
    1. Engage in iterative design processes to refine control systems until they fulfill all system requirements. This involves revisiting and revising design elements based on testing feedback and performance analysis.
    2. Facilitate continuous improvement by integrating lessons learned from testing and operational feedback into subsequent design iterations, enhancing system capabilities and robustness.
  • Mentorship and Team Development:
    1. Serve as a mentor to team members within and across organizational boundaries, offering guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to enhance their technical skills and professional growth.
    2. Foster a collaborative environment by encouraging open communication, knowledge exchange, and best practices, contributing to a cohesive and high-performing team dynamic.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related technical degree (preferred Master of Science or PhD)
  2. 15+ years of relevant experience required
  • Experience with fielding testing of complex electro-hydro-mechanical systems
  • Experience with tuning PID loop systems
  • Obtain and Maintain US Secret Clearance or higher

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge:

  1. Expertise in control theory, system dynamics, and control system design.
  2. Understanding of electro-hydro-mechanical systems and real-time embedded systems.
  3. Proficiency in mathematical concepts like matrix math and coordinate transformations.
  4. Familiarity with simulation tools such as Matlab, Simulink, and ADAM.
  5. Experience in Printed Wiring Boards (PWBs) design and board layout.

Skills:

  1. Strong analytical skills for evaluating and optimizing control systems.
  2. Proficient in C/C++ software development for microcontrollers.
  3. Expertise in hardware integration and troubleshooting.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  5. Effective mentorship and problem-solving skills.

Abilities:

  1. Technical leadership and project management.
  2. Adaptability to changing priorities and fast-paced environments.
  3. Capability to iterate and refine system designs for optimal performance.
