HSCC rehomes over 1,300 animals a year and serves upwards of 30,000 people through our adoption center, community programs and services and our low-cost pet medical clinic. We seek candidates who have demonstrated operational management skills and a working knowledge of animal welfare best practices in a non-profit shelter setting. 

 

Position Summary:

The Operations Director (OD) oversees and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of HSCC's animal care, customer care, and community program & service activities. In collaboration with our operations team, CEO, and Medical Director, the OD will work to ensure that animals move through our system efficiently and that each animal receives the care it deserves during its stay. The OD will ensure that customer and client needs are met in an effective and professional manner. The OD position includes administrative and supervisory duties as well as hands-on shelter work (including direct animal care and handling) if needed. The OD is charged with keeping an eye on the "big picture" in an effort to ensure a high standard of care for our animals and our clients and a positive, respectful, and productive workplace culture for our staff.

Essential Administrative Functions:

  • Proven ability to motivate, lead and inspire our management team and attract, recruit and retain up to 25 operations staff
  • Hire, evaluate, supervise, and provide direction, training, and support to management team and program coordinators 
  • Create a robust communication pipeline ensuring all staff are aware of what’s happening in shelter
  • Troubleshoot and remediate issues of process, policy, procedure and protocol in conjunction with CEO
  • Suggest methods to increase adoptions and develop and implement processes that streamline operations, improve customer service, and enhance our programs and services.
  • Oversee and manage database, reporting shelter statistics and data trends (i.e. intakes, adoption, euthanasia, ) and strategize using KPI’s to effectively improve operations
  • Skillfully address and resolve personnel issues, requesting support from HR and the President & CEO as needed
  • Oversee operations staff scheduling and approve operations team bi-weekly timesheets for submission to Finance & Administration Director
  • Grow, direct and manage a Shelter Outreach Team
  • Manage annual shelter operations budget including generating quarterly projections
  • Attend board meetings and present shelter related information to members as requested by CEO
  • Other responsibilities as directed

 

 Essential Operational Functions:

  • Oversees the training and direct activities of all operations staff and synergizes shelter operations with Community Pet Clinic medical team
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and trusted working relationships with staff, volunteers, customers, clients, and community partners
  • Working closely with the Medical Director and Clinic Operations Manager, helps leads animal care daily rounds meetings and assures the productive flow of information and execution of duties between shelter and medical clinic
  • Manages training of Animal Care and Customer Care Managers
  • Oversee Humane Investigator & Animal Care Manager to accommodate relinquished and seized animals; work with law enforcement on animal abuse cases as needed
  • Oversee dog behavior contracted services
  • Ensure the cleanliness and orderliness and safety of the facility at all times
  • Manage facility maintenance needs - both inside and out - and ensure facility and equipment are functional and safe
  • Supervise Volunteer Coordinator ensuring that volunteer engagement is adequate to support staff
  • Maintain supply inventory either directly or by delegation (including adoption/animal care related supplies)
  • Maintain, update, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Assist with the cleaning, feeding, adoption and intake of shelter animals when emergency support is needed
  • Other responsibilities as directed by CEO

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years operation and management experience in animal welfare or similar field, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Knowledge of progressive practices in animal welfare
  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational, time management, and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze facts, devise solutions and implement initiatives
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in intense and emotional situations 
  • Integrity, honesty and empathy are guiding principles
  • Adept at multi-tasking abilities in a fast-paced environment and executing directives in a timely fashion
  • Advanced technological literacy
  • Proficiency in G Suites and Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with shelter management software a plus
