Reports to: Aquatics Superintendent

Summary

Under the direction of the Head Guards and the Aquatics Superintendent, Lifeguards are responsible for providing professional customer service to members of the facility, enforcing facility rules and regulations, ensuring patron safety, and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards are expected to be proficient in American Red Cross lifeguarding skills, to conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism, and treat the public and co-workers with fairness, equality, and respect.

Essential Duties

  • Continuously be alert, scanning, and prepared to respond to an emergency while on surveillance duty
  • Prevent accidents from occurring in the water and on deck, when possible, by enforcing all policies, rules, and regulations that govern the conduct of persons using the pool
  • Identify emergency situations, activate and execute the facility’s Emergency Action Plan, including conducting the appropriate water rescue (if applicable), administering first aid, performing CPR, and providing other emergency care as needed
  • Check patrons in as they come into the facility
  • Professionally and knowledgeably answer questions and educate patrons on the policies, rules, and regulations governing the facility
  • Perform basic cleaning and maintenance tasks to maintain a clean and safe aquatic facility for patrons and staff, including cleaning and maintaining the pool and hot tub areas, surrounding deck area, Pool Office, First Aid Room, Party Room, and storage rooms and areas
  • Inspect pool facilities, equipment, and pool water to support a safe environment for patrons
  • Monitor facility operations and maintain an orderly pool area, foresee possible issues with patrons or the pool schedule, and take steps to prevent such problems
  • Personally comply with and enforce all policies, procedures, and regulations set by the Joliet Park District, Aquatics Department management, American Red Cross, and the local and state health department
  • Conduct oneself in a manner that helps to create and maintain a working environment conducive to positive team morale and teamwork
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and friendly attitude while engaged in daily operations and stressful situations with patrons and co-workers
  • Maintain an acceptable appearance at all times in both uniform and personal hygiene
  • Available to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings, as required
  • Complete all records, reports, logs, etc., as required
  • Identify potentially dangerous situations, conditions, or behaviors
  • Identify and properly respond to emergencies (in the water, medical emergencies, etc.)
  • Make quick and accurate decisions regarding emergency response measures in high stress situations
  • Knowledge of and proficient ability to perform appropriate lifeguarding techniques for providing on-site emergency care
  • Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies
  • Able to communicate with patrons and staff in a professional manner

Hours

Part time, approximately 10-30 hours per week. May require days, evenings, weekends and holidays

The employee is occasionally required to swim, dive, tread water, and retrieve weighted objects from in the pool.

Education and Experience

Some high school required

Additional Eligibility Requirements

American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications must be obtained upon hire
