Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire.
Primary site of coverage is located in Exeter, NH. Hours: M-F, 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Pathology Technologist is responsible to provide a wide-range of high-level support to Pathologists and Pathologists’ Assistants (PAs); working closely with them at Pathology’s sites of service to provide support in the processing of tissue specimens.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides accurate and thorough gross examination of small biopsy specimens and larger, uncomplicated tissue specimens from designated sites of service (precise list of uncomplicated, larger specimens per Pathology policy).
- Submits appropriate tissue sections necessary for histologic preparation.
- Efficiently dictates accurate, concise gross descriptions for biopsies and larger, uncomplicated tissue specimens.
- Works with pathologists and PAs to increase efficiency at sites of service.
- Performs frozen sections as needed at various sites of service.
- Maintain equipment and supply inventory; maintain cleanliness of work area; dispose of specimens as needed.
- Participates in various projects in support of the Pathology Division’s goals and objectives.
- Complies with established safety and biohazard regulations.
- Assists in the conduct of quality assurance within Pathology.
- Attends relevant pathologist and/or PA meetings
- Interacts effectively with lab employees, pathologists and others
- Demonstrate professionalism at all times
- Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment
- Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the department
- Is proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues

- Bachelor's or associate’s degree in laboratory science or its equivalent: 60 semester hours, including 24 semester hours of medical lab technology, or 60 semester hours, including 24 hours of science that includes 6 hours chemistry, 6 hours biology, and 12 hours chemistry, biology or, medical laboratory technology in any combination, and laboratory training that includes either completion of a clinical lab training program or 3 months training in pathology.
- Experience in laboratory medicine / anatomic pathology highly desirable
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with, and problem solving for, physicians and laboratory staff
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to make decisions
- Strong customer service skills
- Strong analytical, presentation, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks
- Computer and laboratory software experience desirable (Power Path, Microsoft Office)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
- May be required to work a 2nd shift schedule, with flexibility
- May be required to stand or sit for long periods of time while attending to his or her clinical duties
- Operation of various office equipment: dictation systems, fax machine, telephone and voice mail system, computer, e-mail system, cell phone, pager, and copier
- Travel to various sites of service will be required
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens may occur. Use of appropriate measures is required for safety controls and techniques.
