SUMMARY:

Provide direct nursing care for students with disabilities and staff as needed. The students we serve have a variety of medical needs that require the support of a compassionate nurse. In this role you will be part of a small team of nurses, therapists and teachers that ensure our students the best medical attention and educational services.

REPORTS TO:

Principal/ School Nurse

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • As directed by School Nurse or Health Care Coordinator and within parameters of the New Jersey Nursing Practice Act, assumes responsibility for direct student health care activities
  • Provides appropriate information to assist School Nurse in preparation and maintenance of an effective health care plan for each student; follows and enacts each plan and reports observations and findings to School Nurse
  • Notifies the School Nurse of significant findings or changes in student’s physical or mental condition
  • Initiates emergency assistance as per policy and procedure
  • Administers prescribed medication to students and first aid to students and/or staff
  • Attends classroom team meetings and discusses pertinent health issues
  • Performs other functions as directed by supervisor or Elementary School principal

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and demonstrated competence in the general practices and principles of Licensed Practical Nursing; of statutes, rules and regulations governing the practice of Licensed Practical Nursing in a school setting; of child development and developmental disabilities
  • Ability to convey health information to others clearly, concisely and logically; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain proper working relationships with students, parents, supervisors, co-workers and staff
  • Perform physical activities such as lifting, carrying and moving children with disabilities
  • Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to ethical standards of the profession, personnel policies, procedures and universal health precautions

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Licensed Practical Nursing, current NJ license as a Licensed Practical Nurse; at least one year’s experience in a school or pediatric setting or an equivalent combination of education and experiences

FLSA CLASSIFICATION/WORKING HOURS: Non-Exempt. Employee receives at least the minimum wage, is paid by the hour and is eligible to earn overtime compensation.
