Bilingual Educational Coach (ELA) - Newark, Elementary K-3

Teaching Matters is a national nonprofit organization, headquartered in New York City, with the mission to close the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system for underserved and historically marginalized children. From states and districts to schools and classrooms, we partner to help teachers and school leaders develop the skills they need to teach well, lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement.

We currently seek exceptional educational consultants to support transformative instructional improvements in Newark, NJ public schools. Teaching Matters consultants work hands-on in our partner schools to support teachers and leaders in developing the skills necessary to create culturally responsive, engaging learning experiences for all students. This is an opportunity for the right candidate to join our team to ensure every teacher and leader is supported to meet the needs of all students.

The primary role of the Educational Consultant will be to coach teachers and administrators onsite in schools across Newark, NJ. Essential responsibilities of the role include:

  • Coach teachers within student-centered cycles focused on developing key competencies in literacy instruction, with a special focus on best practices for instructing multilingual learners.

  • Support teachers in creating and implementing culturally responsive lessons and resources for all students, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners.

  • Guide teachers and leaders in effective goal setting, assessment, and data analysis practices. Incorporate goals based on both district curriculum and dual language development and acquisition.

  • Facilitate teacher teams to develop literacy knowledge and reflect on practice, including looking at student work toward the goal of improving pedagogical practices and student outcomes.

  • Guide school leaders in making critical changes to systems, structures, and communication in their school, leading to an environment where professional collaboration is embraced and student success is the focus

  • Differentiate teacher support based on individual needs and address needed teacher mindset shifts.

  • Build trusting relationships with partners and empower educators to continue to grow in their profession.

Key Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Literacy coach or instructional leader, plus 4 years teaching in grades PreK-3

  • Experience working in urban schools with diverse student populations, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities

  • Strong knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices aligned with the science of reading and culturally responsive pedagogy

  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coaching towards tangible changes in teacher practice and ambitious, measurable student results

  • Dynamic presenter, comfortable engaging groups of educators in workshops and professional learning communities

  • Strong analysis, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as strong systems for organization and time management

  • Superior interpersonal skills to motivate and lead others at all levels within a school

  • Comfortable using online collaboration tools, including Zoom and Google suite

  • Demonstrates deep commitment to Teaching Matters’ mission, vision, and core values


In addition to the requirements above, we are prioritizing educational consultants with expertise in one of the below areas:

  • Conversational proficiency in Portuguese and/or Spanish

Full time: 5 days a week on site

Per diem rates range from: $600-$640 per day with a $300 per day training rate.
