The Camp Counselor is responsible for assisting the Camp Director in the preparation and presentation of all aspects of ZooCamp including activities, crafts, games, animal encounters, tours through the zoo, and all other aspects of ZooCamp. This position is for someone who is hardworking, enthusiastic, creative, and eager to learn. The summer will be filled with children and animals so the applicant must feel comfortable in this setting.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist in conducting summer camp for ages 4-13.
  1. Help in the preparation and facilitation of lessons and activities. This may include craft preparation and facilitation, leading games and teaching lessons.
  2. Assist with before and after-care for approximately 16 campers.
  3. Ability to communicate with Zoo guests and provide excellent customer service and positive interactions with all Zoo guests, employees, and camp families.
  4. Learn how to handle select ambassador animals for use of camp/other animal encounters.
  5. Work collaboratively with Education volunteers, interns, ZooTeens, and staff.
  6. Assume other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

 

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Must be 18 years or older
  2. Available to work 40 hours per week (8 hours/day) Monday-Friday
  3. Previous experience working with children such as, have at least four weeks experience as a junior counselor, have participated in structured group camping, or have at least four weeks experience in a supervisory role with children.
  4. Ability to work with children of all ages
  5. Outstanding customer service skills, both internal and external
  6. Excellent oral presentation skill
  7. Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  1. A strong desire to deliver ZNE’s messages, mission, and goals to our campers
  2. Reliable transportation to and from Franklin Park Zoo
  3. Willingness to spend long periods of time outdoors
  4. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain
  5. Must agree to abide by all Zoo New England regulations concerning safety and conduct

 


Preferred Job Requirements

  1. Previous camp experience as a camp counselor
  2. Previous experience working with multiple age groups
  3. Previous experience with kids in an educational setting
  4. Willingness to learn how to handle select ambassador animals
  5. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
  6. Preferred candidates are usually enrolled in, or have completed, an undergraduate program or studies in zoology, education, biology, or a related field, or they have related life experience
  7. Current CPR / First Aid certification

 

Hours, Location, and Term of Appointment

Hours: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, 5 days/week, Monday – Friday. (Hours may vary depending on before and after care coverage).

Location: Franklin Park Zoo

Term: Maximum of 14.5 weeks, June 10 – August 23
