The City of Essex Junction is looking for a dedicated professional to join the Community Development Department who wants to make a difference and see their work efforts result in tangible outcomes in Vermont’s newest city. Essex Junction is a 4.6-square-mile walkable city committed to thoughtful planning and growth.

As a City Planner, you will be responsible for various zoning, transportation, housing, economic development, and long-range planning tasks. You will be responsible for development review- coordinating with developers, the City Engineer, and various City Departments to review and shape private development proposals ranging in scale from triplexes to multi-million-dollar mixed-use apartment projects.

The Department is also in the midst of several major projects that you may be drawn in to support. This includes the creation of a Transit-Oriented Development Master Plan and the renovation of the downtown Amtrak station.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent writing and analysis skills, be comfortable talking to a wide variety of stakeholders, and be capable of explaining complex ideas to community members. The Planner will be expected to prepare reports and documents for the Development Review Board. No workday will ever be the exact same, and the chosen candidate will have an opportunity to become a well-rounded professional with experience in multiple planning disciplines. 

This role reports to the Community Development Director

PAY/WAGES

The pay range is between $26.96 to $29.70 per hour based on experience.

HOURS

8 am to 4:30 and at times may vary.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Provide staff support to the Development Review Board, Housing Commission, and other municipal boards as assigned.
  • Conduct development review and coordinate input by various City Departments to influence development proposals in the early stages and improve the outcome for the City and the applicant.
  • Participate in select transportation, land-use, and public facility planning projects as assigned by the Community Development Director.
  • Research and write staff reports and memoranda on various current and long-term planning.
  • Perform the duties of the Assistant Zoning Administrator in their absence.
  • At times will issue zoning permits and certificates of occupancies for projects.

Qualifications

  • Ability to, or have a strong interest in learning to, read land surveys, topographic maps, aerial photographs, construction drawings, land development plans, and maps.
  • Good familiarity with land use and site planning principles and laws.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the public, City officials, and other City personnel, as well as government agencies, developers, community groups, businesses, and outside consultants. Customer service and the ability to work with the public is a priority in this position.
  • Working knowledge of GIS is preferred.
