The Assistant Principal of Student Life & Facilities plays a critical role in developing and enforcing school policy in alignment with our school's mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives. This position ensures clear communication of policies, consistent enforcement of school rules, and fosters a harmonious, respectful, and disciplined learning environment.

The Assistant Principal of Student Life & Facilities will work closely with the Office of Student Life Associate. The OSL Associate will serve as an administrative support to ensure seamless execution of key responsibilities below:

Key Responsibilities:

Student Activities Supervision:

  • Oversee all student activities, ensuring presence during events or delegating appropriately.

Publication Initiation:

  • Manage printing/publishing tasks including labels, homeroom organization, planners and main office file updates at the beginning of the year.

Teacher Observations/Evaluations:

  • Conduct formal and informal observations/evaluations of novice and experienced teachers, in collaboration with the Principal and Assistant Principal of Academics.

Disciplinary Coordination:

  • Implement disciplinary practices and maintain related records, including the demerit/detention system and disciplinary probation.
  • Communicate with parents regarding disciplinary issues and facilitate necessary meetings to resolve conflicts.
  • Supervise detention and detention opportunities weekly.
  • Prepare, distribute, and collect letters to inform parents when students are placed on disciplinary probation.

Attendance Oversight:

  • Supervise attendance and lateness records, and liaise with guidance counselors and parents in cases of excessive absences or tardiness, including attendance probation.

Student Council Supervision:

  • Moderate the Student Council, supervising meetings, activities, campaigns, elections, induction ceremonies, and leadership/recognition assemblies.

Mentorship Programs:

  • Oversee the Junior Ambassador Mentor and Freshman Academy Program Mentor.

Academic Council Participation:

  • Serve as a member of the Academic Council.

Event Coordination:

  • Coordinate special events related to student life, including orientation programs and recognition days, collaborating with the Student Council and other groups. These events include but are not limited to: Senior Prom, Sophomore/Junior Formal, Senior Week, Spirit Week, etc.
  • Coordinate participation in the Throgs Neck Veterans Day Parade, Throgs Neck St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the Morris Park Columbus Day Parade.

Announcement Supervision:

  • Oversee PA announcements.

Policy Communication:

  • Participate in developing the annual school calendar and faculty/student handbook, ensuring content is communicated effectively.

Student Advocacy:

  • Act as a student advocate in interactions with school constituencies.

Interdepartmental Communication:

  • Maintain communication with the Guidance Department, homeroom teachers, and other faculty/staff to integrate social and academic life.

Health and Safety:

  • Communicate with the School Nurse and serve as the first point of contact for student accidents or illnesses.
  • Supervise the School Security Guard.
  • Update the School Safety Plan and make changes whenever necessary.
  • Conduct and coordinate evacuation drills and lockdown drills.
  • Work with the Counseling Department to coordinate mental health initiatives as part of our partnership with the Jed Foundation.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging:

  • Meet regularly with the DEIB officer to discuss school climate initiatives based on DEI Respect Form findings.
  • Coordinate with the AV team and the DEIB officer to ensure that DEI HRs run smoothly.

Conflict Facilitation:

  • Mediate disputes among students and between students and faculty/staff.

Community Liaison:

  • Liaise with the Fire Department, local police, and community representatives regarding student behavior. Obtain F03 and F07 certification from FDNY and conduct periodic fire and emergency lockdown drills.

Facilities Oversight:

  • Oversee the Maintenance Office, coordinating timely repairs with the Facilities Manager and Director of Finance.
  • Work with the plant manager to coordinate subcontracted work gets completed.
  • Review costs associated with facilities work.

Co-Curricular Program Oversight:

  • Develop job descriptions for club moderators, ensure active and well-monitored clubs, and coordinate the Co-Curricular fair.
  • Schedule and evaluate extracurricular activities and sports programs with moderators and the Athletic Director.

Building and Cafeteria Supervision:

  • Conduct rounds of buildings and cafeteria supervision as needed.
  • Coordinate with the School Security Guard to ensure the safety precautions are followed throughout the day.

Shuttle Bus Program Oversight:

  • Complete all necessary Article 19-A documentation, mandates and updates.
  • Coordinate with the Athletic Director for shuttle buses by athletes.
  • Work with the bus drivers to develop the shuttle bus routes in August.
  • Coordinate the shuttle bus service.
  • Coordinate bus repairs, inspections and maintenance.

Summer Responsibilities:

  • Introduce Co-Curricular Program to Freshman Orientation groups and supervise activities.
  • Work with the Director of Technology to review and revise the Technology Responsible Use Policy.
  • Meet with the Student Council to have HR bins (planners, forms,etc.) ready to distribute on the first day of classes.

Additional Duties:

  • Adapt to evolving administrative needs, with responsibilities adjusted as necessary. These may include submissions to DCAS for security services payment; and NPSE grants.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in educational administration.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
  • Certification in school administration or a relevant field is preferred.
