Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required, or an Associate Degree in Nursing (from an accredited program) with an equivalent level of working experience will be accepted as having met this requirement.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • A minimum of three to five years of Pre-Op and/or or PACU experience preferred.
  • A minimum of three years in nursing management preferred.
  • Any previous RN experience in the Orthopedic specialty area or Intensive Care unit preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Arizona is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required or obtained within 90 days of hire.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and collaboration with other hospital departments, establishes and implements policies and procedures, and maintains departmental compliance with accreditation and regulatory agencies, and investigates all incidents and accidents taking the appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, physicians, and employees.
  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the hospital. Reviews short- and long-term plans, strategies, and systems that identify and utilize available resources to efficiently manage daily operations, accomplish goals and objectives with specific target dates. Oversees management of department operationally and fiscally.
  • Provides administrative and financial accountability for planning, directing, staffing, coordinating and controlling the functions and activities of all phases of the PACU/Pre-Op and Preadmission service lines.
  • Reviews daily the proposed PACU/Pre-Op census.
  • Supervises the pre-admission process and ensures that all pertinent information is communicated to all the perioperative care providers (nursing, anesthesia and medical personnel).
  • Coordinates schedule and staffing needs on the PACU/Pre-Op and Preadmission Testing departments to ensure proper staff coverage and all equipment needs are ready and available.
  • Serves as a liaison with physicians, allied health personnel, and organizational vendors to identify and prioritize specialty service supply and equipment needs for patient procedures.
  • Promotes/supports growth of others through preceptorship, mentoring, and orientation when appropriate. Serves as a positive, clinical role model to facilitate staff development, providing pertinent feedback to CNO and hospital Administration. Determines the competence and qualifications of the team and providing and implementing continuing education programs, and in-services to meet the needs of the department.
  • Maintains supply inventory, including assuring the procurement of necessary supplies, equipment and expertise, and the timely delivery of needed care, and alerting administration of these needs in a timely manner.
  • Monitors and maintains metrics by collecting and analyzing data related to quality or performance improvement projects that apply to all clinical areas, providing solutions and actions plans to reach departmental metrics and goals.
  • Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning and providing direct patient care, acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of appropriate information. Ensures safe patient care within the Preadmissions and PACU/Pre-Op areas ensuring that proper patient identification, resources, and supplies are available to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assists department staff to evaluate practice and create strategies for further improvement. Helping, if necessary, to assesses the patient’s condition during a Preadmission, PACU/Pre-Op stay and works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient in the aforementioned units.
  • Participates actively in professional organizations that provide evidence-based education and resources for the perioperative setting. These organizations include, but are not limited to, NAON (National Association of Orthopedic Nurses), ASPAN (American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses) or other relevant groups).
  • Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.
