The Development Coach is a year-round position reporting to the Head of Training. The Development Coach will work in strong collaboration with other members of the training department and their supervisor to stay current with the evolution of Therapeutic Interventions and ensure effective staff development. The Development Coach is an expert in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS), the writing of Incident Reports (IRs), and facilitators in the Staff Debriefing process. The Development Coach will provide real-time support to all staff during situations involving escalated student behavior upon request. It is the duty of the Development Coach to guide staff through preventative/de-escalation strategies to encourage and maintain a hands-off approach during these situations. If a hands-on approach is needed, it is the duty of the Development Coach to provide real-time feedback to ensure that TCIS holds are properly executed to maintain the safety of students and staff. The Development Coach is responsible for facilitating the de-briefing process for staff after these situations. The Development Coach will collaborate with staff to develop, review, and submit IRs with professional/clinical language. The Development Coach will work in strong collaboration with Supervisors across all departments to help create Employee Growth Plans (EGPs) for staff.
POSITION MISSION
It is the mission of the Development Coach to empower all staff to confidently lead through challenging situations with students while prioritizing the use of hands-off de-escalation strategies.
ROLES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Carries Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) Radio at all times during shift.
- Quickly reports to the location of escalated student to coach staff through the situation and serve as extra support, if necessary.
- Provides real-time coaching/feedback/support to all staff and students during escalated situations.
- Encourages staff to remain hands-off in crisis situations by guiding staff through Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) de-escalation techniques and other hands-off approaches in accordance with SOIS policy.
- Guides staff through proper use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) holds after exhausting all hands-off options.
- Facilitates de-briefing session with staff after the crisis situation; allows time and safe, confidential space for staff to process and learn from the crisis situation.
- Collaborates with staff members to develop, review, and submit IRs with professional/clinical language.
- Collaborates with members of the Clinical Department to discuss student-specific related concerns related to Therapeutic Intervention.
- Collaborates with Supervisors across all departments to help create and reassess Employee Growth Plans (EGPs) for staff.
- Attends all required meetings/trainings determined by the head of training.
- Remains current with training refreshers, re-certifications and policy/procedure updates.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
- Demonstrates and exercises a mindset geared toward a trauma informed approach when working with students and staff.
- Demonstrates a growth mindset and the desire to learn more about the scope of Therapeutic Intervention.

- Demonstrates passion for working with the Autism population and ensuring the overall safety/well-being of students and staff.
- Desire to empower staff to work confidently through crisis situations without the Development Coach present.
- Knowledge of/experience with verbal de-escalation techniques/therapeutic intervention strategies.
- Demonstrates knowledge and strong understanding of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for schools (TCIS), writing of Incident Reports (IR’s), the facilitation of the Staff Debriefing Process, and Employee Growth Plans (EGPs) for staff.
- Ability to make safe and reasonable decisions under pressure.
- Ability to maintain composure and a kind demeanor during crisis situations.
- Ability to work well with a team and collaborate with colleagues across departments.
- Demonstrates leadership qualities and the ability to advise and provide positive/constructive feedback to staff.
- Demonstrates self-awareness and adaptability to best serve as a Development Coach.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with children and early/late adolescents on the Autism Spectrum and/or developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge and experience of crisis prevention with emphasis on verbal de-escalation and how it is applied with the Autism population.
- Passion for advocating for the needs of the Autism population regarding Therapeutic Intervention.
- Combination of post-secondary education and/or experience working with special needs populations as a Crisis Intervention Specialist, DSP, Social Worker, Recreational Therapist, Registered Behavioral Technician, Behavior Specialist, or a related position.
- Three-year minimum of relevant professional experience; previous experience working in a school and particularly a boarding program a plus
- Experience working with individuals exhibiting challenging behaviors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Weekday afternoon/evenings, and weekends shifts. Full-time staff work a traditional 40-hour work week. Your manager will discuss the particular shift hours, which could be day, evening and/or weekends.
Salary: $62,400/year
