This is a supervisory position that reports directly to the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.  This position is responsible for supervising the mechanics and automotive service workers that repair and perform preventative maintenance on all city vehicles and equipment. Works closely with the fleet supervisor in implementing administrative functions for the division.
 
  • Under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, provides supervision and direction for the mechanics and service workers in the division. Recommends personnel action for promotions, merit increases, disciplinary actions, transfers, and terminations.  Provides related reports as needed for personnel actions to the superintendent.
  • Prepares job invoices (work orders) on repairs to vehicles or equipment detailing the problem. Assigns work orders, monitors ongoing work, and inspects upon completion to assure compliance with established work and safety standards. Interprets city policies and procedures to workers and enforces compliance as needed. Provides technical guidance and support for complex mechanical problems.
  • Develops priorities and adjusts repair schedules as needed. Coordinates repair schedules with various department managers. Notifies department managers concerning regularly scheduled maintenance. Maintains and updates maintenance schedules for the City/BLW fleet. Works with the Police Fleet Maintenance Coordinator to prioritize patrol car repairs.
  • Maintains both hard copy and electronic files and records of completed work orders, employee timecards, and other division records.  Provides the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor with all records as needed or requested.
  • Ensures that new employees are trained and advised of division work and safety standards. Monitors new employee progress and compliance of work and safety standards. Arranges for employee training courses and certifications as needed.
  • Conducts and participates in regular divisional meetings with employees in conjunction with fleet supervisor.
  • Assist employees in regard to repairs and technical information.
  • Demonstrates a positive customer service attitude toward all City/BLW departments, vendors and the public.
                 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of six years progressively responsible vehicle repair experience to include at least three years as a supervisor in a similar operation. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge in working on a variety of vehicle engines, equipment, parts, and related repair requirements.
  • Knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of current personnel practices and regulations.
  • Skill in computerized data management.
  • Skill and experience in the supervision of employees.
  • Ability to operate a computer, utilize MS software, conduct research on the Internet, and utilize other job-related software to research various manufacturer’s parts specifications and availability, and place parts orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete certification courses as assigned.
  • Ability to analyze vehicle and equipment damage information and make recommendations.
  • ASE certifications required in heavy and/or light duty.
  • Must have a Class C Georgia Driver’s License at time of hire. Individual is responsible for passing Class A Commercial written exam within 5 months from the date of hire and obtain a Georgia Class-A Commercial Driver’s License within one year from the date of hire.
