Position: Farm Lead - Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Department: Farm

Location: 4840 Fish Hatchery Rd Pacific Botanicals

Seasonal Position: March - December

Schedule: Friday-Tuesday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm

Pay: $20.00 - $23.00/hr.


Summary: The Farm Lead is responsible for assisting the Farm Manager by coordinating the work for the Farm crew, performing all organic farming related tasks required to grow a wide variety of medicinal herbs and plants, and keeping accurate records of all activities as required. This position is designed to provide support and guidance for the farm crew on the weekends. This is a seasonal position during the months of March - December. The following duties are performed in a safe and timely manner, thereby contributing to the overall successful operation and growth of the organization.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities can include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Ensures optimal productivity at the farm by actively working in each area as directed, including the following: propagating, planting, preparing soils and seed flats, applying fertilizers, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, and harvesting crops as directed.
  • Responsible for achieving optimal productivity when directing the farm crew.
  • Ensures safe equipment use and practices are followed while operating tractors, responsible for training safety awareness of the hazards associated with working close to tractors.
  • Assists with optimal harvest yields, by following harvesting and processing instructions; including but not limited to, picking, separating, cleaning, drying, and evaluating of crop quality of each herb according to established procedures.
  • Works with other crew members to ensure proper post-harvest handling and timely delivery of all harvested crops.
  • Ensures accurate record keeping of all assigned farming activity by keeping complete, legible logs of all planting, production, harvest and delivery activities.
  • Provides training to new farm members and teaches safety training as needed.
  • Supports with identifying apparent crop disease or pest problems
  • Supports installation of new drip and sprinkler systems, and adjusts, as needed.
  • Responsible for providing transportation for workers to stores and other public places.
  • Provide Spanish-language support as needed for farm crew.
Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, soil science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • 3 + years of related hands-on seasonal farming experience
  • Fluent in Spanish and English (required)
  • Familiarity with the cultivation of herbs preferred

Certificate and Licenses: Current valid Driver’s License


Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Ability to carry out detailed oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment without close supervision.
  • Must pay close attention to detail, ability to detect issues and troubleshoot.
  • Willingly provides back up support for farm crew and farm supervisor as directed.
  • Ability to travel weekly; running errands, transporting farm crew, and making deliveries, as directed.
  • Participates in all team meetings, sharing ideas on continuous process improvement with the supervisor and team members.
  • Experience with efficiently and safely using hand tools and small power tools, by always reading and following operating instructions, completing necessary training, and maintaining proper storage of tools as directed.
  • Ensures safe working conditions, by always following established safety procedures, participating in all required safety training, and remaining aware of safety concerns.
  • Offer of employment is contingent upon a successful background check and drug screening.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine documentation. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Spanish bilingual skills are required for this position, with the ability to speak, read, write, and interpret Spanish fluently.


Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, area, circumference, and percentages. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.


Physical Requirements: Frequent walking, bending, reaching, standing while performing tasks; must be able to lift up to 49 lbs. on a frequent basis. Work conditions include exposure to outdoor weather and is based in a non-climate-controlled environment. It can be noisy requiring PPE as well as; exposure to airborne particles, fumes/dust, and aromatics from plant material.


Reasoning Skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Interpersonal Skills: Ability to quickly organize and communicate thoughts, and to understand communications from others. Ability to maintain composure, listen, and respond appropriately.
