The Center for Family Life in Sunset Park is looking to hire a part-time ESOL Instructor to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages to new immigrants at a Manhattan location.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Creating and customizing instructional materials (including but not limited to lesson plans, curricula, and syllabi) by building on own training and experience in order to deliver high-quality lessons for adult English Language Learners.
  • Assisting with registering students at the start of each cycle and completing all paperwork.
  • Assisting with assessing each student's level of ability utilizing Best Plus 2.0 to ensure appropriate placement.
  • Informally and/or formally assessing each student throughout the semester to track progress.
  • Maintaining daily student attendance records and following up with students with low attendance.
  • Assisting with students’ monthly progress updates/check-ins.
  • Collecting and maintaining student work for student portfolios.
  • Communicating with program director regarding apparent barriers to student success (e.g., child daycare needs, possible health/housing issues, etc.).
  • Coordinating with program director regarding next steps in student's progress toward achieving their goals.
  • Providing all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports.
  • Attending at least eighteen (18) hours of professional development activities in the fiscal year.


Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) required
  • Some computer skills required (Zoom, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • BEST Plus 2.0 testing certification preferred
  • At least two years of experience teaching ESOL preferred
  • Experience working with immigrant communities
  • Ability to provide services in a manner sensitive to the backgrounds and cultures of program participants
  • Bilingual Spanish and/or Chinese preferred
  • Ability to teachin personn at a Manhattan location

The salary for this position is $28 per hour. This is a part-time position.
