WATERFRONT STAFF (LIFEGUARDS)

Position Summary

Lifeguards supervise all free swim periods, boating and special events held at the waterfront at camp. Lifeguards also instruct swim lessons and maintain waterfront and boating facilities to comply with safety regulations. When not on the waterfront, work as a General Counselor in assigned village living with campers and accompanying them to activities. Applicants do not need to be certified lifeguards to apply but must be strong swimmers. Red Cross Certification is provided for free during orientation.


Waterfront Staff report to the Waterfront Director.

Responsibilities

  1. Assist in all waterfront related activities such as, but not limited to: instructing swim classes, boating classes, supervising free swim and special events, participating in beach clean-up and preparation and overseeing buddy systems and checks. There are typically six swimming/boating activities scheduled per day.

  1. Responsible for maintaining the waterfront, boating and fishing facilities to comply with all safety regulations.

  1. Submit all forms, evaluations and records that are required by the Waterfront Director.

  1. Be totally familiar with emergency procedures and follow them when needed.

  1. Maintain an adequate level of fitness and technique throughout the summer by participating in daily workouts (swimming, boating, practicing rescues, etc.) and keeping a log of trainings.

  1. Daily lifeguarding responsibilities may include but are not limited to: lifting heavy objects and/or people, diving into the water, working in hot and sunny conditions and communicating in a clear and concise manner with campers and staff.

  1. When not on the waterfront, work as a General Counselor in assigned village.

  1. Provide 24-hour-a-day direct supervision, leadership and guidance to twelve campers with assigned co-counselors. This includes supervising the group in between and during the daily program, planning cabin activities, eating meals with campers and behavior management.

  1. Assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of campers.

  1. Live in a cabin with 6-12 campers and co-counselors for the full duration of each camp session. Time off during each encampment will be arranged by a supervisor.

  1. Understand that the position involves living in cabins with little to no privacy and eating all meals with campers in a large, noisy dining room.

  1. Understand that campers come first, and decisions should be made in the best interest of campers.

  1. Address stressful situations appropriately in a fast-paced, interactive environment.

  1. Be an active member of the camp community by participating in all camp programming including camp-wide events, overnights, hikes, swimming, activities and village meetings. This includes but is not limited to: going on hikes in the woods on camp property and going in the water during swimming activities. At times, lifting heavy objects may be necessary.

  1. Write daily reports and a final evaluation for each camper to help evaluate their needs goals and progress during their camp experience.
