Surgical Coordinator

SUMMARY: Serves as the liaison between surgeons and their teams, hospitals, Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC) and other surgical staff. Ensures everything is in place before a procedure begins. Surgical coordinators may also act as an intermediary between surgeons and patients or their families. This might include helping patients understand what will happen during their surgery, answering any questions they have about the procedure, or explaining how they can best prepare for it.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops patient care plans based on surgical needs, including, but not limited to, determining appropriate pre-operative care.
  • Schedule patients according to their needs and preferences and in accordance with the surgeon’s schedule.
  • Communicate with hospital/ASC or other staff members about patient’s scheduled surgery.
  • Coordinate with anesthesiologists to ensure that all aspects of the surgery are properly planned and prepared for.
  • Review patients’ medical records prior to surgery to ensure that they are in good health and undergo the procedure safely.
  • Notify patients about the need for pre-operative testing and post-operative follow up care.
  • Provide pre-operative care to patients in collaboration with other staff.
  • Composes and types routine correspondence as required.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Communicate with attorney’s office regarding case for needed information.
  • Obtain authorization via payer website or by phone and follow up regularly on pending cases.
  • Initiate appeals for denied authorizations.
  • Confirm accuracy of CPT and ICD-10 diagnoses in the procedure order.
  • Contact patients to discuss authorization status.
  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Follow up with patient to confirm authorization and booked appointment.
  • Pre-Certify/Authorization of all surgical procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates degree (A.A.), two to four years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Strong organizational skills; able to manage priorities and workflow.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor

  • Monday to Friday
  • 8:00 am - 4:00 pm or 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
