Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician

Dept.: Florida Eye Center at FMC

Job Summary: Looking for an outgoing person with at least 1 year experience in Ophthalmology. Must be able to work at both the Tampa and Land O Lakes office Must be able to work at both our land o lakes and Tampa office. Certification is preferred but not required.

Essential Functions of the Position: Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant preferred but not required.

  • Completes the start of day processes
    • Powers up equipment
    • Logs on work station
    • Uncover keratometer/autorefractor, visual field, Ascan room if needed
  • Properly rooms patients
    • Works up patients for the providers
    • Checks patient's glasses
    • Confirms information required by provider is present (labs, surgery records, etc.) and necessary tests are performed
    • Updates IEHR (allergies, medications, history, etc.)
    • Assists in following appointment schedule
    • Prepares patient for examination or treatment
    • Obtains informed consents and ABN as necessary
    • Notifies provider when patient is ready
    • Assists provider during examination and with treatment
  • Performs diagnostic studies and treatments as ordered by the provider
    • Ascans
    • OCT
    • Visual fields
    • Obtains consents
    • Performs diagnostic testing needed or requested by provider
    • Prepares specimens and requisitions for lab courier
  • Processes and assists provider with requests
    • Handles medication refill requests
    • Obtains prescription overrides and prior authorization when needed
    • Completion of forms requested by patients
  • Handles patient and clinical messages:
    • Returns calls to patients re: testing or medications
    • Notifies patients of test results and instructions from provider
    • Triages patient calls and needs
    • Addresses and handles clinical tasks
  • Distributes, reviews, and teaches patient education
  • Prepares charts
    • Prepares paperwork for charts
    • Acquires all medical records necessary for visit
    • Makes sure all ordered tests have been performed and results are present
    • Confirms authorization has been obtained if required
  • Completes the end of day processes
    • Maintains medical equipment; ensures all equipment is calibrated, cleaned, sterilized, charged and covered
    • Collects red bags as necessary
    • Monitors and replaces sharps containers when needed
    • Stocks, cleans and sanitizes exam/work-up lanes and tech station
    • Checks for expired medications and supplies
    • Empties HIPAA container into destruction bin
    • Ensures all rooms are closed down, and schedules are copied and posted
    • Runs work-up sheets for the next day
    • Logs off work station

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintains an organized and clean work area
  • Participates in maintenance of clinical supplies
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Physical requirements
    • Able to stand or walk for long periods
    • Use of proper body mechanics
  • Normal concentration and normal complexity of decision making
  • High level verbal and written communication skills
  • Above average ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Occupational Exposure:

  • High risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chemical hazards

Job Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • COT-Preferred not required
  • Minimum 1 year experience required
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Must be willing to travel to both the Land o lakes and Tampa office.
  • Strong team player who is eager to learn
  • Basic computer proficiency
