SUMMARY:

Incumbent will be responsible for assessing and verifying specimens, grossing, preparing and staining cytology samples for pathologist read; maintaining all cytology quality control records. Accurately verifies and prints patients' demographics in the computer system according to given protocol with minimal error. Assists with frozen sections, maintaining QC on assigned frozen section rooms. Performs send-out procedures according to current protocols. Works well with pathologists and members of the BRG system

Position requires good judgment and decision-making skills, ability to be a team player, and ability to work independently. Employee must maintain a cooperative attitude and be supportive of on-going changes in the lab, in a professional manner at all times.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cytology:

  • Assist with verifying, grossing, processing, labeling and staining cytology specimens
  • Log specimens and work on cytology log
  • Assign proper case type and protocol - slide and cassette inventory in computer
  • Store and/or discard cytology specimens at end of day
  • Stain and label all cytology slides received or produced according to current guidelines

Off Site:

  • Assists pathologists with frozen sectioning and staining in a prompt and efficient manner, with good quality sections
  • Properly labels and stains all frozen section slides and prepares for transport to PGL
  • Assists with cleanup of frozen section cryostat and area , re-stocking reagents/supplies as needed
  • Maintains the frozen section room stains & supplies, recording appropriate QC
  • Retrieves all specimens from surgery and endoscopy for PGL pickup
  • Prints demographics and verifies correlation of paperwork on all specimens received before sending to PGL
  • Checks daily list to account for all cases
  • Marks Saturday list of cases on Fridays
  • Retrieve requested slides and/or blocks whenever needed
  • Inventories, requests, unpacks and supplies as received
  • Works with pathologists and other BRG team members to expedite requests and resolve issues in an efficient manner
  • Assists pathologist on autopsies
  • Pulls slides for slide loan requests when received from PGL sendouts
  • Handles sendouts
  • Other duties as assigned by the Histology Manager and/or Pathologists

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate in Science Degree; Must meet CLIA requirements
  • Some medical lab experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred
  • Certified copy of degree transcript required to confirm it meets CLIA requirements
