Job Description:


We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Technician to join our Operating Room team. As a Surgical Technician, you will play a critical role in the preparation and assistance during surgical procedures. You will ensure that the operating room is set up according to surgical procedure schedules, maintain sterile conditions, and provide necessary instruments and supplies to the surgical team. This position requires a strong understanding of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and surgical procedures.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Discuss special needs with the surgeon before surgery and prepare the operating room in a timely manner.
  • Prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping as needed.
  • Maintain and organize the instrument table, ensuring all instruments are ready and accounted for.
  • Identify and rectify any damaged or incomplete trays to avoid delays or injury.
  • Set up the operating room according to procedure schedules, selecting and opening only the necessary supplies.
  • Ensure proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures.
  • Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and other items according to policies.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, providing necessary instruments and assistance during procedures.
  • Assist with patient draping and positioning, as well as the placement of surgical dressings post-procedure.
  • Handle surgical specimens according to protocol and assist with the disposal of sharps, fluids, and waste.
  • Prepare soiled instruments for proper transportation to the decontamination area.
  • Ensure proper cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Clean the operating room following each case and return equipment to storage areas.
  • Follow infection control policies, AORN guidelines, OSHA guidelines, and other regulatory requirements to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Maintain an inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Collaborate with the team to manage the maintenance and ordering of supplies, documenting equipment use and maintaining records.


Key Success Factors:


  • Knowledge of infection prevention and sterilization standards.
  • Proficiency in sterile and aseptic techniques.
  • Understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools and technologies used in surgery.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with surgical and central sterile processing team members.
  • Ability to work in environments with occasional exposure to chemical and radiation hazards.


Qualifications:


  • Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • Less than 1 year of experience in surgical technology (new graduates welcome).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by NBSTSA or NCCT, or completion of formal military training in surgical technology, or employed in a surgical technologist role in a healthcare facility before September 1, 2009.
