Lab Medical Technologist

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Applies current concepts of laboratory testing and performs modern techniques which are demanded in the laboratory

OVERVIEW

  • The evaluation is to assure individual performance, departmental goals and organizational goals are aligned. It is designed to support communication between the manager and the employee. Employee perception of their own performance is very important. To maximize the benefit of this process, both the manager and the employee participate in the evaluation process.

  1. Education
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and a passing score on a state approved registry examination for Medical Technology, or
    • Certification from approved technical school and a passing score on a state approved registry examination for Medical Technologist, 3 years experience required to qualify of the examination, or
    • "Grandfather" technologist as granted by the Georgia State Laboratory Licensure.
  2. Licensure
    • State of Georgia Licensure approved registry examination for Medical Technologist: ASCP, NCA, AAB, AMT, or HEW
  3. Experience
    • Previous clinical laboratory experience is preferred, but not required.
    • Clinical evaluation and assessment skills are required for the scope of services provided by this facility which include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Below are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the position’s purpose and objectives. These are critical or fundamental to the performance of the position. They are the major functions for which the person in the position is held accountable. Following are the essential functions of the position, along with the corresponding performance standards.
    • Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received into the laboratory, according to laboratory policy and procedure.
      • Evaluates specimens for acceptability, investigates, and documents problems with unacceptable specimens. Ensures proper specimen is being analyzed.
      • Verifies accuracy before reporting results by re-checking results, investigating delta codes, absurd results, instrument codes, and critical values
      • Ensures reflex testing is performed when required. Ensures orders are correct.
      • Ensures abnormal situations are referred to pathologist or manager according to established protocol.
      • Performs proficiency tests accurately as required in testing areas.
    • Reports test results in a timely manner and according to laboratory policy and procedure.
      • Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed.
      • Reports results within time limits established for test procedures: Morning run is completed by 7AM, stat and timed requests are completed within 45 minutes from specimen receipt, and routine tests are completed within 2 hours from specimen receipt when applicable.
      • Ensures prompt notification to physician/nursing staff of established "critical or panic" results.
    • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
      • Ensures quality control is performed, recorded and acceptable prior to verification of test results.
      • Notifies appropriate supervisor of unacceptable quality control results. Holds patient reports until problem is resolved.
    • Performs and documents scheduled maintenance and calibrations on instruments as required by laboratory policy and procedure.
      • Ensures preventative maintenance is performed, recorded and acceptable prior to verification of test results.
      • Notifies appropriate supervisor of unacceptable maintenance results. Holds patient reports until problem is resolved.
    • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions
      • Able to perform computer functions required for order, receipt, and resulting of patient testing: order-entry, specimen receipt, labeling, generation of work lists, interface results, add-on and cancellation of results when required.
      • Able to query, print, and fax results to appropriate area with accurate documentation.
    • Performs related laboratory duties.
      • Answers phone in a courteous manner according to hospital policy. Serves as a resource to phlebotomy, nursing and medical staff. Is able to transfer when required.
      • Adheres to infection control and safety policies and procedures. Wears appropriate PPE's at all times.
      • Ensures supplies are received and properly stored. Notifies lab management when supplies are low.
    • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
      • Ensures work areas are cleaned and stocked with in-date supplies.
      • Ensures all safety and waste container are properly disposed according to infection control and safety procedures.
      • Maintains clean equipment and is responsible for neatness throughout the department.
    • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates to ensure an orderly work-flow.
      • Assists co-workers with their assignments, including specimen collection, as required to expedite collection and resulting of tests.
      • Informs patient care services of any delays in results.
      • Informs supervisor of problems in completing assignments for any reason.
    • Readily accepts changes in assignments or schedules.
      • Willing to adjust personal schedule in case of need. Comes in when called.
      • Willing to learn and implement new procedures as required.
    • Aids in the training of new employees and students in the performance of duties.
      • Works with new employees and students to assist in training of departmental procedures.
      • Acts as a resource to the new employee or student.
    • Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures.

      • Communicates effectively with on-coming shift. Alerts staff of any pertinent problems or situations.
      • Ensures daily quality control is completed and acceptable in all testing areas.
      • Ensures all areas of lab are staffed appropriately for workload.
      • Organizes workload to ensure turnaround times are acceptable.
      • Serves as a liaison between laboratory and nursing staff and physicians.
      • Ensures daily preventative maintenance is completed and acceptable in all testing areas.
    • Performs section coordinator duties if applicable
      • Performs complex trouble-shooting for laboratory equipment.
      • Ensures all maintenance procedures are performed and documented.
      • Reviews quality control daily for shifts, trends, and outliers, and takes action when required. Ensures monthly reporting is completed timely.
      • Ensures all methods are calibrated according to policy and procedure.
      • Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and places orders as required.
      • Ensures reagent checks are performed as required.
