Position Purpose: Under the direction of the Treatment Director, the Intern Counselor-SUD will provide direct services to individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder, many of whom may also have a mental illness. This position receives clinical and program supervision and oversight from the Treatment Director and from the SUD Mental Health Professional-Clinical Supervisor during staff and clinical review meetings. This position focuses primarily on providing outpatient treatment to help individuals progress in the recovery process under the direction and supervision of the Treatment Director.

The duties include providing both group and individual treatment and rehabilitation services to adults at the outpatient program, as well as in their homes if clinically indicated.

A few responsibilities of this position include:

  • Perform clinical and intake/admission duties under the supervision of the Treatment Director and SUD Mental Health Professional-Clinical Supervisor.
  • Provide treatment and rehabilitative services to clients using models of treatment that include Person Centered, Motivational Interventions, Harm Reduction, Solutions-based and Stages of Change.
  • Conduct groups that include group counseling, skills training, peer support, daily living skills, health-related issues, and psycho-educational groups.
  • Provide individual services that address a variety of needs determined by the unique needs of the individuals served. These may include family counseling and other social service functions.
  • Provide outreach, monitoring, transition services and assistance with needs as clinically indicated to individuals in their homes or in other community settings. This includes driving individuals in your vehicle as needed.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate a comprehensive assessment of the individual’s substance use and mental health problems within five treatment sessions and complete a summary of this assessment.
  • Complete an individual treatment plan with the individual based on the assessment that complies with program regulations.
  • Complete discharge summaries according to program policy/regulation.
  • Communicate with all relevant others to ensure services are well coordinated.
  • Complete all required written documentation according to program policy and regulation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Must be a student seeking LADC/LPCC licensure and be enrolled in an accredited degree program that has a formal internship agreement with MHR. Prefer at least one year of experience working with people with mental illness or substance use problems or both.
