Collections Specialist
The daily responsibilities of a Collection Specialist will vary from day to day depending on the needs of the department. Collection Specialist is responsible for observing accounts to identify overdue payments, make calls to clients regarding overdue payments, report collections activity, address client queries and negotiate payment plans as necessary. Collection Specialist will use soft skills, hard skills and industry knowledge to help clients reach payment resolution.
Position Responsibilities
• Monitor accounts receivable and identify overdue accounts.
• Contact clients with overdue accounts and attempt to either collect the overdue amount or negotiate payment plan to collect in installments.
• Maintain records of client contact and attempted contact with delinquent accounts and follow up as necessary.
• Working knowledge of accounting and financial processes
• Resolve client issues and complaints concerning billing.
• Provide weekly list for demand letters to be sent to delinquent accounts needing outside collection agency efforts.
• Work with team to reach a resolution for clients with more complex issues regarding their account.
Qualifications
• Familiarity with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), other state, local laws and governing debt practices is ideal.
• Collection Specialists work with multiple departments within the organization and interface directly with clients, sharing information using professional communication clearly and accurately is crucial.
• Customer service and interpersonal skills to include effective communication skills, active listening, speaking and writing.
• Collaboration: Working with others on the accounting team and other departments is vital.
• Multi-tasking: There are responsibilities which will need to be met simultaneously. Multi-tasking skills will help manage workflow.
• Time management: Keeping track of time to ensure work is being done on time throughout the day is a necessity.
• Accounting Processes: Math skills and understanding accounting practices are a must.
• Attention to detail: Review of work for accuracy is helpful with reporting and client engagement.
• Computer literacy: Understanding and working knowledge of software such as Microsoft Office, QuickBooks and Net Suite (or Oracle-based programs) will help in daily tasks.
