The City of Marquette has seasonal positions available for Park Patrol Officers at the City parks and beaches.  Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays from approximately June 1st through September 2024.  Degree or coursework in criminal justice/law enforcement preferred.  The entry rate is $12.23 per hour.   Applications will be accepted through May 3, 2023.



JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                                   Park Patrol Officer

REPORTS TO:                     Captain of Patrol Operations

EFFECTIVE DATE:            April 1, 2012

JOB CLASSIFICATION:    Temporary / non-exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Marquette City Police Department, the Park Patrol’s primary function will be the monitoring of City parks and beaches for the prevention of drownings, and to provide information and warnings to the public regarding dangerous conditions in the water along with other areas of concern as directed.  Park Patrol presence at City beaches and shorelines will aid in the early notification to emergency responders of a water accident or swimmer in distress.           

Essential Duties:

  • Serve a public relations function for the City of Marquette, presenting a professional appearance and attitude at all times.  Interacts with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Educate the public by warning visitors and making them aware of the dangers of swimming in Lake Superior.
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons on the beaches, notifies emergency responders of water accidents or swimmers in distress.
  • Oversees safety and accident prevention at the City’s parks and public beaches.
  • Ensures the proper communication and enforcement of rules.  
  • Patrols the parks and beach area, issues tickets for violations of park rules.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Perform other related functions as assigned.
  • Document accident or incident reports indicating violations and action taken.

Position Qualifications:

  • Willing to conform to Police Department standards on personal grooming.
  • Requires good people skills, positive attitude, and the ability to interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays from May through Labor Day weekend or the end of the season.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid State of Michigan Drivers License with a good driving history.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of climate and weather conditions.  Ability to withstand temperature changes in the work environment.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, twisting climbing and reaching. 
  • Ability to communicate orally in a clear manner.
  • Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Ability to distinguish various sounds and people or objects at varied distances.
