Job Description

The Tax Manager will work with the Senior Manager – Trust Accounting and Tax and be responsible for the management of the tax compliance process and other assigned tax planning projects of the Organization and the Trust. The Organization includes various entity types and structures located throughout the United States and Canada. The Tax Manager will coordinate closely with the various entities, accounting personnel and third-party service providers to ensure accuracy and timeliness of returns, compliance with applicable foreign, federal, state and local tax rules and regulations, and participate in the Organization’s strategic income tax planning and structuring initiatives.

This hands-on, proven leader will play a key role in the overall Washington Corporations finance, accounting and tax team to deliver complete and accurate information in a prompt professional manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate and coordinate with family office, internal accounting teams and third-party service providers to manage the tax compliance process, including:
    • US federal and state tax
    • Foreign tax (Canada)
    • Sales, use, and excise tax
    • Trusts
    • Transfer pricing
  • Prepare quarterly and annual tax provisions, reconciliations, extensions, estimates and other tax related calculations.
  • Maintain tax basis schedules for all applicable entities and/or personal assets.
  • Partner with and manage relationships with external tax advisors.
  • Maintain oversight of the tax filing calendar and compliance progress tracking to ensure timely filing and payment of all returns, extensions and estimates.
  • Manage regulatory audits of income tax returns, as necessary.
  • Function as the liaison with operating company management and accounting personnel on tax accounting issues and compliance.
  • Support transfer pricing methodologies associated with intercompany transactions and activities.
  • Manage professional services providers actual fees to budget.
  • Perform research, analysis, and due diligence for various income tax related issues to support management decision-making.
  • Ensure internal policies, procedures and processes are followed related to income tax accounting and compliance.

Requirements, Skills, and Characteristics:

  • Progressive experience in the preparation and review of various federal, foreign, state, and local income tax returns including trusts, partnerships, limited liability companies, S-corporations, corporations, not-for-profits, and individuals
  • Strong research, documentation, and conclusion capabilities as it relates to tax issues and transactions
  • Working knowledge and understanding of direct and indirect taxes, transfer pricing, tax credits, tax planning and structuring strategies
  • Indisputable record of integrity and the highest ethical standards
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; thrives in a team environment; has a positive influence on co-workers and team members
  • Embraces change and fosters continuous improvement and adoption of best practices

  • History of building and maintaining strong personal relationships, internally and externally

  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Office suite
  • JD Edwards experience is a plus

Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Taxation
  • Masters Degree in Business Taxation, preferred
  • CPA license in good standing, preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of four years’ experience in tax
  • Big Four” or national accounting firm preferred
  • Experience in family office and high-net-worth individual income tax planning and compliance preferred
