NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision, performs law enforcement duties in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and in compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and statutes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Operates an emergency vehicle in all weather conditions; provides emergency assistance and respond to dispatched calls for service; patrols assigned region to serve as a crime deterrent.
  • Protects crime scenes; collects evidence and gathers information; conducts interviews and interrogations; prepares and submits related reports; tracks all evidence for the Department.
  • Resolves conflicts between parties; enforces protection orders; applies physical force when intervening in conflicts and as needed when making arrests.
  • Serves arrest warrants and other civil documents; conducts search and seizures; completes investigations and follow-ups; protects and collects evidence; makes arrests and transports prisoners.
  • Writes and reviews reports; prepares warrant applications; prepares documents for court appearances.
  • Enforces traffic related laws; issues citations as appropriate; makes DWI arrests; directs traffic and assists disabled motorists as needed.
  • Participates in maintaining Department vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains positive community and interpersonal relations; assists with public relations and educational events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field; field work may require physical efforts and exposure to dangerous persons, situations, tools, and equipment.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND successful completion of POST certification and police training.

Must possess a Class A POST certification and a valid Driver’s License; additional training and/or other specialized certifications may be required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Knowledge of:

  • County and Department policies and procedures.
  • Hand-to-hand combat and defensive techniques and tactics.
  • Forensic interviewing and interrogation methods.
  • Evidence collection and handling protocols and regulations.
  • Investigative methods and techniques.
  • Federal, State, and local laws, statutes, and ordinances.
  • Firearm safety regulations, procedures, and practices.

Skills in:

  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Communication clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Collecting and analyzing evidence.
  • Conducting interviews and interrogations.
  • Determining and applying the proper use of force.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
