1. Assists EMT’s and Paramedics with performing emergency medical care.

  • Responds immediately when dispatched for 911 calls and in a timely manner for transfers while on duty.
  • Administers additional care as indicated or directed.
  • Reports verbally and in writing the observations and medical care of the patient in transit to receiving facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
  • Provides assistance to the receiving facility staff, as requested.
  • Ensures compliance with infection control according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assures that patient’s rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy and property are followed.

2. Performs Non-Emergent EMS duties with on duty paramedic

  • Shift to shift communication completed.
  • Refuels and washed ambulances used on night transfers.
  • Ensures that the ambulance is cleaned and kept in a neat orderly condition, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Ambulances used during the day (prior to 1800) are washed and ready for next shift.
  • Performs shift ambulance check, restocks and cleans interior as needed.
  • Checks that all equipment is ready for next run.
  • Decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of the patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure.
  • Restocks and replaces used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures.
  • Take ambulance for service as needed.
  • Perform Lifeline services as needed.
  • Cleans duty office and takes trash to dumpster at end of shift.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by EMS director.

3. Assists in the emergency department.

  • Reports to ED Nurse after EMS duties completed.
  • Assists with basic patient care needs within the scope of the EMT certification including but not limited to:
    • Patient triage and documentation
    • 12 lead EKG’s.
    • Assisting with procedures.
    • Answering call lights and assisting patients as needed.
    • Stocking supplies.
    • 1:1 monitoring of patients as needed (mental health/safety).
    • Assists health care team as needed.
    • Patient rounding.

4. Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities.

  • Administers medications, treatments and procedures in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders and nursing policy, including appropriate performance of standard precautions, using two patient identifiers, and performing patient risk assessments every shift.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
  • Uses National Patient Safety Goals (for critical access hospitals) to ensure patient safety.
  • Implements infectious disease controls as appropriate including isolation procedures, proper use of hand washing and gloves.
  • Follows proper procedures for wasting narcotics and disposal of sharps and hazardous materials.

5. Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of Shenandoah Medical Center’s operations and requirements of the SMC Compliance Program.

  • Abides by Shenandoah Medical Center’s Mission, Vision and Values which are defined by SMC and are readily available throughout the organization.
  • Follows HIPAA regulations and ensures that the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, financial records, employee records, and organizational records is maintained.
  • Adheres to the Corporate Compliance Policy.
  • Follows all Safety and Infection Control Procedures (including but not limited to: Annual In-Services for Asbestos, Emergency Evacuation, Fire Prevention, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste Emergency Response, Lead, Medical Surveillance, Process Safety Management, Safety Committee)
  • Considers the impact of regulations such as Critical Access Hospital requirements, along with Federal and State of Iowa regulations and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance.

6. Performs other duties as assigned.
