As a R&D Technician you will assist in tooling design and construction under the direction of the Extrusion Engineering Manager. Has responsibility for production standards and R&D records. Is a technical resource for production and coordinates resources for R&D work. Hands on tooling creation, repair, run-in, and production assistance (troubleshooting).

Essential Functions of a R&D Technician:

  • Promote and take care of company property and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of maintaining existing tooling with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of working with tool shops both internal and external to build tooling and components.
  • Basic understanding of operating conventional Milling Machine to perform Cutting, Drilling, Milling, and Tapping operations accurately.
  • Basic understanding of operating Lathes to perform Turning, Boring, Drilling, Internal/External Threading, Polishing/Sanding operations accurately.
  • Basic understanding of operating Surface Grinder Accurately and Precisely regarding Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
  • Utilize various hand tools and power tools for finishing operations.
  • Develop an understanding of Die Tuning using conventional equipment safely and accurately.
  • Understanding of company's work instructions, production standards, safety procedures, quality standards, and SOP's
  • Learn how to assist in design of tooling and processes for extrusion of various plastics.
  • Learn how to assist in producing working drawings, utilizing CAD, for tool builds both internal and external machine shops.
  • Learn how to provide technical assistance to R&D technicians and Manufacturing personnel.
  • Develop understanding of designing and developing testing and measuring tools for quality inspections of product.
  • Basic understanding of EDM programming and operating.
  • Learn basic Global Shop procedures (clocking in & out of jobs, daily production & material transfers, checking inventory status, and completing daily tasks)
  • Knowledge of plastic extrusion process preferred
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Drafting skills sufficient to produce finished drawing by hand or CAD
  • Experience with machine shop equipment and best practices.
  • Wire EDM programming skills preferred
  • Knowledge of extrusion equipment and plastic compounds preferred
  • Tooling design experience for extrusion preferred

Qualifications for a R&D Technician

  • Experience in manufacturing environment required
  • Mechanical, or plastics engineering experience preferred
  • Previous plastic and polymer extrusion experience or education preferred
  • Previous CAD experience preferred
  • Will be required to climb, lift, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to work at a steady and consistent pace
