SUMMARY: To encourage students to stay in school through high school graduation and prepare for life by; (1) identifying and coordinating appropriate community resources; (2) expanding foster parent support and involvement and facilitating community partnerships; and (3) providing individualized assistance to students with special needs.
REPORTS TO: Manager, Strategic Initiatives
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Exempt


SPECIFIC DUTIES: Duties of the Youth Development Specialist include but are not limited to the following:

Develop necessary relationships with MAAC students and coordinate efforts to serve student utilizing school staff, foster parents and community representatives.

Collaborate with MAAC Education Family Youth Coordinators to understand the needs of the MAAC students while working collaboratively to support the student.

Provide support to enhance youth and foster parent engagement with the student’s education goals.

Serve as a case manager for youth approximately 25-30 schools to receive long-term sustained services (through individual caseload services) and demonstrate improvement in students’ performance in attendance, behavior and/or academic performance when compared to the previous school year by:
-
Building one-on-one relationships with students, foster parents, school personnel, DFCS Case Manager, MAAC Coordinator, and any other educational or supportive partners.
-
Monitoring attendance, Academics, and behavior and contacting foster parent and MAAC Coordinator of any issues and contacting foster parent and MAAC Coordinator of Students who have attendance, behavior, or academic concerns.
-
Identifying academic deficits and supports needed; such as tutoring, to improve academic performance.
-
Making referrals for foster parent students, to outside agencies as appropriate.
-
Acting as an advocate for students with other institutions, if applicable
-
Accurately maintaining all case files, collecting required data and providing reports for the use of CIS of Atlanta, the school, and MAAC team.
-
Read and interpret student’s educational assessments (EPAC), student referral information packet, and I-ready assessments.

Collect and compile required reports on services delivered.

Adhere to school and MAAC protocol for responding to crisis calls.

Act as a Liaison between supportive agencies, court, MAAC team, DFCS, and other community organizations

Maintain confidential data files.

Maintain a calendar of activities and services.

Provide short-term, crisis intervention service to caseload students based on referrals from MAAC staff, including maintaining a file on each referral to document the services provided.

Providing feedback to the referring source on progress in resolving problems identified

Work with other staff to increase foster parent involvement according to goals established by CIS of Atlanta, individual school campuses and MAAC.

Complete weekly updates, monthly reports of activities and services
-
Meeting with the school designee (School Counselor, School Social Worker) on a regular basis to discuss the progress of the students being served.

Attend required staff meetings, weekly check-ins, goal reviews, training events, and other meetings as requested by CIS of Atlanta or MAAC.

Participate fully in orientation and training, meetings, and other activities required by CIS of Atlanta or MAAC.

Participate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices for the provision of comprehensive school and social work services.

Carry out other duties as determined by the Director of Programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in social work, social sciences, or a human services related field or equivalent years of experience.

Two or more years’ experience in working with schools, families and/or children.

Ability to adhere to policies and procedures to complete administrative tasks correctly and on time and support the organization's goals and values.

Strong computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft office Suite Applications and comfortability using different software for data entry.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to tailor communication styles to different audiences within the school community.

Strong management and organizational skills

Familiarity with education, health and human services, juvenile justice, and other family support services.

Capable of working independently, meet deadlines, work under stress, be resourceful and function as an effective team member.

Prioritize the well-being and success of students in decision-making.

Analyze academic, attendance and behavioral data to identify areas for improvement.

Establish positive and trusting relationships with students, parents, and school staff.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Will require some light lifting.

Must be Willing to travel, as job requires.
HOURS: Working hours are generally 8:00 - 4:30 p.m., however it is expected that this person will have a flexible schedule and will work additional hours as needed to accommodate evening and weekend activities and reporting deadlines. Able to make adequate and reliable transportation arrangement.
