Primary Goal and Purpose: The position of Director of Liturgical Music at St. Jude Catholic plays a vital role to enhance the worship experience through music. This position involves a combination of musical, leadership, administrative, and pastoral responsibilities. This position is expected to foster a prayerful and uplifting worship atmosphere through the thoughtful integration of music into the liturgical life of the Catholic Church

  • Assist the Pastor in identifying the Core Philosophy of the Music Ministry and the role it will
  • play in liturgy. Coordinate with the Pastor to determining the Parish Collection for all liturgies:
  • Sunday and Holy Day Masses, Weddings, Funerals, OCIA, Faith Formation and designated parish
  • celebrations and programs. In consultation with the Pastor, plan the Liturgical Year preferably one
  • season in advance.
  • Lead the choir, instrumentalists, and the assembly at liturgies and/or select team leaders to
  • assist in leading liturgies.
  • Maintain a structure that maintains consistency within the ministry. Develop an independent Cantor
  • Ministry for the parish.
  • Oversee the Sound System and all the equipment associated with the Sound System. Coordination of a
  • Sound System Ministry to include the electronic worship aids.
  • Consult with leaders of liturgical and social ministries on the use of sacred music in their
  • activities. Provide appropriate communication to the community regarding musical forms used in
  • liturgies, seasonal variations, or upcoming activities.
  • Develop a Worship Council which may meet quarterly.
  • Develop and maintain an emergent library of sacred musical compositions. Budget and manage the
  • musical assets and expenses of the community.
  • Recruit, train, direct, and supervise vocalists and instrumentalists. Form, rehearse, and schedule
  • choirs, ensembles as required.
  • Select, train, supervise, and mentor assistant choir team leaders as required.
  • Develop formal and informal communication procedures that adequately inform members of upcoming
  • events and activities.
  • Instill a sense of service and stewardship within the Ministry.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Work within the budget and develop and administer a budget for Music Ministry programs.

• Establish and maintain office hours that are consistent with the requirements of the ministry.

• Attend scheduled staff meetings and ensure adequate communication is maintained to coordinate Music Ministry events and activities with other parish functions. Leads the Liturgical Meetings.

Qualifications

The qualifications for a Music director's position combines a strong musical background with an understanding and appreciation of the liturgical and spiritual aspects of the Catholic faith.

Education:

A bachelor's or master's degree in music, music education, or a related field is often preferred.

• Minimum of 5 years' experience in liturgical music

• Minimum of 2 years choral directing experience
