Job Summary

This position specializes in providing care for pregnant women, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This position is responsible for monitoring the health of both the mother and fetus throughout pregnancy, and providing care during the postpartum period. They may also provide counseling and support to expectant mothers and their families, addressing concerns, providing education, and guiding them through the childbirth process. Additionally, they may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as midwives, nurses, and neonatologists, to ensure comprehensive care for pregnant women and their newborns.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive prenatal examinations, including physical assessments, ultrasounds, and laboratory tests to monitor the health and development of the fetus and mother.
  • Provide personalized prenatal care and counseling to expectant mothers, addressing their concerns, and educating them about pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
  • Manage high-risk pregnancies, including cases of gestational diabetes, hypertension, multiple gestations, and other complications, by developing customized treatment plans and closely monitoring maternal and fetal health.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and midwives, to ensure coordinated care for mother and baby during childbirth.
  • Offer postnatal care to new mothers, including physical examinations, breastfeeding support, and emotional counseling, to promote maternal recovery and adjustment to parenthood.
  • Document patient medical histories, examination findings, and treatment plans accurately and efficiently using electronic medical records systems.
  • Stay current with advancements in obstetrics and gynecology through continuing education, professional development activities, and participation in medical conferences and seminars

Controls and Guidelines

The supervisor provides administrative direction with assignments in terms of broadly defined goals or functions.

The employee usually has responsibility for independently planning, designing, and carrying out programs, projects, studies, or other work.

Results of the work are considered technically authoritative and are normally accepted without significant change. If the work should be reviewed, the review concerns such matters as fulfillment of program objectives, effect of advice and influence on the overall program, or the contribution to the advancement of technology. Guidelines include state and federal laws and regulations, OHC policies and procedures, OHC Medical Staff Bylaws, professional standards of medical practice, medical standing orders, and Centers or Medicare and Medicaid Services Conditions of Participation manual. These guidelines are not applicable to every situation encountered and require independent judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

Complexity / Scope and Effect

The work includes varied duties requiring many different and unrelated processes and methods that are applied to a broad range of activities or substantial depth of analysis, typically for an administrative or professional field. Contacts

Contacts are typically with clinical providers, patients, employees, community resource agencies, patient family members, CDC, State Departments of Health, local Health Departments, Tribal Health programs, and the general public.

Contacts are primarily for obtaining, furnishing, exchanging and providing factual medical information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.

The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility

This is a non-supervisory position that may provide functional direction, guidance and instruction to other employees when necessary. This position possess authority to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees. Instructs employees in specific techniques or technical methods for accomplishing work assignments. The employee may perform the same type of work as other employees, but may be responsible for performance of the more technically difficult, controversial, or sensitive work assigned to the unit or group.

Minimum Requirements

  • Post-secondary education or experience which provides the expertise required to perform effectively the functions of the position may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
