GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of complex cemetery operations and maintenance duties in supervising, planning, organizing, and working in the Kaysville City Cemetery. Performs a range of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in all phases of cemetery maintenance, including facility repairs, equipment maintenance, burials, and grounds maintenance.

This position must work well independently, as a supervisor, and with teams while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise and review staff work in accordance with department policies and applicable State and local laws; train employees; plan, prioritize, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address issues and resolve problems; assist with interviewing and hiring full-time, part-time, and seasonal Cemetery employees.

Instruct staff on the proper procedures for burial operations, the layout of grave spaces, and the proper setup.

Assist and participate in Parks and Recreation Department special events, which may include managing an event.

Attend classes and seminars to learn and stay knowledgeable about methods and equipment for improving cemetery operations.

Following burials, backfill grave space, tamp, level, and sod ground; place flowers in an orderly fashion; clean site.

Properly install memorials, foundations, and vases; repair and replace foundations and borders; work directly with memorial companies on the installation of memorials.

Evaluate Cemetery operations and maintenance activities; recommend improvements and modifications; maintain records and prepare various reports on operations and activities; maintain accurate records of burial purchases and grave site locations.

Make recommendations for and implement policy and procedures for the operation of the Cemetery; evaluate annual fees charged for Cemetery services and recommend changes.

Participate in department commitment to safe practices for the public and employees. Ensure departmental compliance with State and federal environmental regulations, OSHA laws, risk management policy, and emergency operations.

Assist in the design and construction of Capital Improvement projects in the Cemetery.

Work directly with grieving families and funeral directors in conjunction with the sales of graves and the scheduling of funerals; answer questions and resolve customer complaints about grave sites, memorials, and vandalism.

Operate and maintain medium automotive equipment, such as snow plows, dump trucks, backhoes, track hoe, and turf maintenance equipment, such as mowers; troubleshoot and repair electrical problems in controllers and electrical valves associated with sprinkler irrigation systems; may occasionally operate heavy equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education/Training:

High school graduation or equivalent with training in horticulture, construction, or related field; bachelor or associate degree preferred,

AND

Five (5) years of progressive park or cemetery operations experience, with at least two (2) years of supervisory-level experience.

OR

Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge:

  • Turf management, forestry, and horticultural practices.
  • Computer software use and applications associated with cemetery record keeping and data.
  • Cemetery record keeping and similar clerical work.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Industry trends.
  • Principles and practices of cemetery supervision and operation, including turf care and irrigation systems.
  • State and local laws applicable to the operation of cemeteries.

Skills:

  • Implementation of maintenance standards.
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work.
  • Communicating with the public, elected officials, and staff.

Abilities:

  • Manage and prioritize workload.
  • Evaluate the performance of support staff and take corrective action, when necessary.
  • Set goals, objectives, and priorities with staff.
  • Assist in the development of management of a budget.
  • Make judgments and decisions necessary when troubleshooting repairs or maintenance or managing resource needs.
  • Perform physical labor.
  • Solve problems when dealing with families, funeral directors, and other vendors.

3. Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Utah driver's license and be deemed insurable and able to operate City-owned equipment and vehicles. A commercial driver's license (CDL) may be required.
  • Applicator Pesticide Spray License preferred.
  • Must work on-call, including rotating Saturdays as staffing allows. Early mornings and late evenings as necessary.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above functions are required. Requires regular lifting and moving up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 100 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Works near moving mechanical parts and operates equipment or machinery; occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals; noise level is usually quiet while in the office or moderately noisy when in the field; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, and heat.
